I just love photo ornaments. I think they are a great treasure and I look forward to looking through them each year. I have designed several variations including a wreath and star photo ornament and a vintage style ornament.

This project works up quickly and uses just a little yarn to complete. Make them for friends with their kids’ photos in the center. I have made these for my siblings with my nieces’ and nephews’ photos.

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH1, turning chain, as a stitch.
– Pattern is worked in one direction and in rounds joined with a slip stitch. (Except the bow and scarf.)
– The number in the parenthesis is the stitch count for the round.
Crochet Snowman Body (Make 2)
With White
Round 1: Make a Magic Circle, CH1, Work 10 HDC into the Magic Circle. SLST to first HDC. (10)
Alternative Round 1: CH3, Work 10 HDC into 3rd CH from the hook. SLST to first HDC. (10)
Round 2: CH1, Work 2HDC in each ST around. SLST to first HDC. (20)
Round 3: CH1, *HDC in next ST, Work 2 HDC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 10 times. SLST to first HDC. (30)
Round 4: CH1, *HDC in next 2 STs, Work 2 HDC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 10 times. SLST to first HDC. (40)
Round 5: CH1, *SC in next 3 STs, Work 2 SC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 10 times. SLST to first SC. (50)
Fasten off. For one piece, leave a 16-inch yarn end to use for sewing the pieces together later. Using the button yarn color, embroider 3 buttons onto one of the body pieces.
Snowman Head Backing
With White
Round 1: Make a Magic Circle, CH1, Work 10 HDC into the Magic Circle. SLST to first HDC. (10)
Alternative Round 1: CH3, Work 10 HDC into 3rd CH from the hook. SLST to first HDC. (10)
Round 2: CH1, Work 2HDC in each ST around. SLST to first HDC. (20)
Row 3: CH1, *HDC in next ST, Work 2 HDC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 10 times. SLST to first HDC. (30)
Row 4: CH1, *SC in next 2 STs, Work 2 SC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 10 times. SLST to first SC. (40)
Fasten off leaving a 12-inch yarn end to use when sewing the head pieces together.
Snowman Face Frame
With White CH20, SLST to first CH.
Round 1: CH1, *HDC in next CH, Work 2 HDC in next CH* repeat from *to* a total of 10 times. SLST to first HDC. (30)
Round 2: CH1, *SC in next 2 STs, Work 2 SC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 10 times. SLST to first SC. (40)
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Snowman Ornament Scarf
With a fun color CH 31
Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and each CH across. (30)
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
SnowLady Bow
With a fun color CH 8 leaving a 6-inch beginning yarn end.
Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and each CH across. (7)
Row 2-4: CH1, turn, SC in each ST across.
Fasten off leaving an 8-inch yarn end. Use a needle to thread both yarn ends to the top and bottom center of the rectangle.
Using the longer yarn end, wrap it around the center of the rectangle and pull tight to create a bow shape. Knot the two yarn ends together. Use the yarn ends to sew the bow to the front of the snowman face frame.
Assembling the Crochet Snowman Ornament
At this point, you have 2 body pieces, 1 head backing, 1 face frame, a scarf, and the optional bow. The bow should already be sewn to the front of the face frame.
Step 1: Take your small photo and cut it into a circle that is slightly smaller than the head pieces.
Step 2: Place the body pieces, one on top of the other, and using the long yarn end, sew the pieces together using a basic seaming stitch.
Step 3: Next, sew the head pieces together with the photo placed between the two pieces. At the bottom of the head pieces, you will insert the body pieces about a 1/4 of an inch and sew through all 4 layers of crochet as you work around the head pieces. This will join the body with the head piece.
Step 4: Take the scarf and wrap it around the snowman’s neck. Use some of the scarf yarn color and sew the scarf together with a stitch or two where the scarf crosses over each other.
Step 5: Cut an 8-inch piece of yarn or twine. Thread it through the top of the snowman and tie the ends together to make a loop for hanging the ornament on a tree.
Now your Crochet Snowman Ornament is complete and ready to be enjoyed. They work up fast and make a great gift.
