Keep warm this winter with the cute Heather’s crochet scarf. This free crochet pattern and video tutorial will show you how to make this stylish accessory.
Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this Heather’s Crochet Scarf pattern. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge, video tutorial, and sizing information.
From a Cardigan to a Crochet Scarf
We were sitting around a bond fire and I was working on my daughter’s short sleeve cardigan. My sister-in-law says, “That is a lovely scarf.” The cardigan is made from two rectangles and the rectangle I was making for the toddler size looked just like a scarf. So for Christmas, I made the pattern again but longer this time. I gave it to my sister-in-law, Heather. It is fun to see how one pattern can inspire another.
A Built in Border Scarf
If you have been looking at my patterns you may see how obsessed I have been with the built-in ribbed border idea. I have used it for the all-in-one blanket and for this stained glass blanket and even for an ear warmer. The border on this scarf gives it a little extra pizzazz.
The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern
Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH1, turning chain, as a stitch.
– You can make your scarf longer or shorter by working more or fewer rows in the center stitch pattern.
CH 35
Row 1: HDC in second CH from the hook. HDC in each CH across. (34)
Row 2-4: CH1, turn, BLOHDC in each ST across.
Row 5: CH1, turn, BLOHDC in first 5 STs, skip a ST, (HDC, CH1, HDC) in next ST. *skip 2 STs, (HDC, CH1, HDC) in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 7 times or until you have 6 STs remaining. Skip a ST, BLOHDC in last 5 STs.
Row 6–162: CH1, turn, BLOHDC in first 5 STs, *(HDC, CH1, HDC) in next CH1 space* repeat from *to* a total of 8 times or until you have 6 STs remaining. Skip a ST, BLOHDC in last 5 STs.
Working 162 rows will give you a scarf that is approximately 72 inches long. You can work more rows or fewer rows in this section to adjust the length of the scarf.
Last Row 1: CH1, turn, BLOHDC in first 5 STs. HDC in every ST and CH space until you have 5 remaining STs. BLOHDC in last 5 STs. (34)
Last Rows 2-4: CH1, turn, BLOHDC in each ST across.
Fasten off and weave in your ends and your scarf is complete. This scarf works up quickly and makes a great gift.
