Crochet Photo Ornament
In elementary school, we would be asked to bring a photo of ourselves to class and around the holidays our teacher would help us make them into little ornaments. My mom kept a box of all the ornaments we made in class. There was one box for every child full of picture ornaments. Check out the other two versions of picture ornaments here!
Yarnspirations was kind enough to supply the yarn for this project.
Photo ornaments are just so special. This year I made one for my nieces and nephews. I am giving them to my siblings as gifts. They are personalized gifts that are handmade. What could be better?
Quick and Easy Ornaments
These crochet ornaments work up quickly and easily. Just crochet a simple round back and the framed front. They come together in just six rows. You can spend a night making them and have a special gift for your family.

Special Stitches
Standing Double Crochet and Standing Treble Crochet: To create a standing stitch, simply make a slipknot and put the yarn on your hook, then work a stitch directly into a stitch of the previous row. For the double and treble crochet, you will need to use your finger to hold the slip knot in place while making the stitch. This way you will be able to yarn over without the yarn slipping.

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH2, turning chain, as a stitch.
– Three colors are used for the front of the ornament. You will fasten off at the end of each row and work standing stitches to join the next color.

Crochet Photo Ornament Front

At this point, you are halfway around your ornament.

Work 2 DC in next ST, HDC in next ST, SC in next 4 STs, HDC in next ST, DC in next ST, Work 2 DC in next 3 STs, DC in next ST, HDC in next ST, SC in next 4 STs, HDC in next ST, Work 2 DC in next ST. SLST to first TR. (52 STs total for row 3)
Fasten off and weave in all the yarn ends.
Blocking and Stiffening the Crochet Photo Ornament (Optional)
The photo will help hold the shape of the center of the ornament. To help the last row of the front ornament piece you can stiffen it with PVA (Elmer’s) glue. Place the front piece of the ornament on a blocking mat, foam mat, or cardboard box. Using a few pins, pin the ornament to shape it. Use a 1 part water to 3 parts glue mixture and lightly brush it on the back of Row 3 of the ornament.
Let the glue dry then assemble the ornament.
Assembling your Ornament
Take your photo and cut it into a circle that is just a bit smaller than the ornament back. Use the long yarn tail from the ornament back to sew the front and back of the ornament together with the picture sandwiched in-between the two pieces.
You will be sewing through the top of row 3 on the ornament back and through the top of row 2 on the ornament front. Once you have sewn all the way around, weave in your yarn ends.
Cut a 6-inch strand of yarn or twine. Thread it through the top of one point and knot the ends together.
Now your crochet photo ornament is complete. They work up fast and make a wonderful gift.
