The Rustic Ornament is a beautiful, quick and easy crochet pattern that will have you whipping up tons of ornaments in no time at all. I mean it! This project takes 2-3 minutes per ornament. It only uses basic crochet stitches and is a great project for beginners.
This year Christmas is going to be amazing. I am determined to decorate the house and start traditions and bake sugar cookies. But between nap times, teaching ABCs, and trying to write blog posts, I barely have time to eat let alone make beautiful handcrafted Christmas decorations.
Plus another fun challenge, I have a baby this year so everything needs to be shatter proof and soft incase a set of baby hands gets them.
So this pattern and many more patterns and crafts I will release this holiday season will be focused around the words: Quick, Easy and Beautiful. Expect chunky yarns, big hooks and a lot of creativity.

The Farmhouse Rustic Ornament
Now back to these ornaments. If you like these ornaments, you will have to thank my cousin Amanda for sending me a picture of a chunky knitted bauble ornament. I loved the big chunky stitches and, of course, I knew I could make them myself.
When choosing a yarn for this project I wanted something super bulky with great stitch definition. I have worked with the Bernat Maker Big before in for my Summer Day Bag project and knew it would be perfect! Bernat has a new yarn Colorwhirl that would also look beautiful made up into Baubles.
Yarn Substitutions
When I first made this pattern, the Bernat Maker Big was easier to get your hands on, now it can only be found online. I have seen others use T-shirt yarn and it turns out very pretty. You can buy T-shirt yarn or learn to make it here.
I also made the Bauble above using a Jumbo Roving yarn (size 7 yarn) from Loops and Threads at Michaels craft store. This yarn was HUGE, so I used a 15mm (P/Q) hook and the smallest crochet ornament pattern to end up with a 3 in. diameter ornament.
If you are at the yarn store looking for a yarn to use with this pattern, just keep an eye out for any size 7, Jumbo, yarn. You can also use two strands of a Super Bulky (size 6) yarn as well. A good option would be two strands of Lion Brand Thick and Quick. Just use whatever hook gives you good tension. You want the bauble to be stiff enough to hold its shape. Since we do not use stuffing in these crochet ornaments, it is ok if there are some holes between the stitches.

Small Rustic Ornament Pattern
Notes:
- You will be working in the round.
- You may use a stitch marker if you need to but since there is only 3 rows, I did not find it necessary.
R1: Work 6 Sc in to a Magic Circle.
R2-3: Working in a continuous round,Sc into each of the next 6 stitches.
Slst to the next stitch. Fasten off.
Look at your bauble. Turn it inside out and look at it again. Each side will look a little different, so decided which side you prefer on the outside. Tuck you starting and ending yarn tail into the bauble.
Take a 10 inch piece of twine and weave it through both sides of the bauble. (Shown in the picture below.) Tie a double knot at the bottom. I did not find it necessary to gather the top of this size bauble ornament. Tie another know at the top of the twine to create a ring to use to hang the bauble. Your small bauble it complete.

Now weave one piece of twine to the other side of the bauble and knot with the first piece of twine so that your twine is knotted at the top center of the bauble instead of on the side. Knot the tip of the twine together and trim the excess twine.

Such an easy project & yet….. I have started it 4 times & frogged it 4 times……….is it supposed to be hallowed? The ones on the pics look solid
Mine are hallow. You are welcome to stuff them but I would not over stuff them because the big stitches tend to show the stuffing. Where are you having trouble? I can try and help.
The world seems to be sold out of the yarn you suggested for this project. Do you have any suggestions on other brands that would yield the same result?
Yes. I have actually been working on this. So I have recently made this ornament with roving yarn from Michaels, you want to make sure it is the size 7 yarn. I used a 15mm crochet hook (so a bigger hook) and I made the smallest ornament size but it was the size of the biggest. I have also seen this made with T-shirt yarn but I am not sure which hook they used. You want to use a size 7 yarn and may need to play around with hook size and ornament size to get what you are looking for.
Very cute and easy to make. Thank you for sharing!🎄🎄
You are very welcome
pero cual es el patron? no aparece como se teje..
It is a simple pattern and then gathered together at the top.
Love it!!
Thanks!!
Because I tend to find the best ideas last minute, this ornament pattern is perfect! I had a little trouble seeing the stitches at the beginning because the yarn is so fluffy but, once I got in the groove, they worked up quickly. I made 11 in an hour!!! Thank you 😊
That is wonderful! I am sad the original yarn has been discontinued but I think this would look lovely with several strands of worsted weight yarn held together.
