The Plaid Bowl Cozy is the perfect solution to the hot out of the microwave bowl problem. A while back I designed the Quick and Easy Bowl Cozy and it has been such a big hit. The pattern is easy and works up in about 20 minutes. I wanted to create another version of this bowl with a little more fall and winter flair.
I love when the weather turns colder and I can pull my plaid shirts out. Plaid is such a beautiful and iconic cold weather pattern. I knew I had to create a plaid bowl cozy.
I reworked the pattern quite a bit, making the base pattern easier then the original Bowl Cozy so that you can focus on the color work required to make the plaid pattern.
I am huge fan or working with color changes! You can see my love for tapestry crochet in the patterns below or check out my other free patterns here.
Color Selection
In order to make this a plaid bowl cozy you will need to use three colors of the same shade. An example would be a white, tan and brown that I used on the bowl in the pictures above.
An alternative what to make a plaid is to use three colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. The picture below is of a baby dress that I created a plaid skirt with gold, orange and red.
Whichever you choose to use is fine, but you will need to mentally label your colors as dark, medium and a light color. I will be using these terms when in the pattern to describe the colors for color changes.
Construction
This is bowl cozy works well insulating your hands because it is crocheted with two strands of worsted weight yarn at a time. This creates a nice thick material and makes this pattern work up in only 9 rows.
Microwavable?
With my last bowl cozy pattern, I was often asked if the finished product is microwavable. So here is my two cents on the matter. Yes, I have microwaved my bowl cozy for up to 2 minutes in a medium watt microwave.
Acrylic yarn is basically a type of plastic and if it gets hot enough it will melt. I am not sure if you can reach that temperature in the microwave. If you plan to microwave it a lot I would suggest a cotton worsted weight yarn.
Lastly, I do not microwave my bowl cozies often. This is because the bowl cozy is suppose to absorb the heat from the bowl and keep my hands from getting uncomfortably warm. So why would I heat up my bowl cozy in the microwave with the bowl? Instead after I heat up my bowl I quickly place it in the bowl cozy and then remove everything from the microwave.
Now that we have covered all that, let’s get to making a plaid bowl cozy!

Notes:
- It is easy to adjust this pattern. Work the pattern until it is as wide as you needed it then work row 9 until it is tall enough. Just keep alternating your colors every other row (explained further below).
- I have provided a crochet chart pattern as a visual aid. The charts only cover rows 1-4 to help establish where we are changing colors.
- You will be working with two strands of yarn for each color.
- A stitch count is provided at the end of each row.
- Need more help? A video tutorial will be coming soon.
