Simply Fall Crochet Baby Dress encompasses all the things we love about fall. With a plaid skirt, ruffled trim and simple bodice this pattern is the perfect little number for family fall pictures.
After seeing how popular my Simply Spring Baby Dress has become, I couldn’t wait to do a fall variation. The Simply Fall Baby Dress is as simple as the Spring version with just a few extra details. Don’t worry, I will be including video tutorials for every part of the CAL.
I am so thrilled that we will be working on this baby dress as a community. If you want to crochet a long with us, make sure you join the Our Crochet Journey Facebook Group to share your photos and spread encouragement through this event.

Alright it is time to talk about color. When choosing a yarn for this project I wanted to find a yarn that would provide us a huge range of color combinations for the plaid skirt. With the Red Heart With Love, I was able to create 14 plaid color combinations and this was only with the colors I found at my local Joann’s store. I am sure you could make even more combinations with the colors they offer online. If you do not want to make a plaid skirt you could use a variegated yarn or make a solid color skirt.
Creating a Plaid Color Combination
The easiest way I found to create a plaid color combination was to find two shades of the same color then add either white (or off-white) or black to the colors to create a plaid combination. Below you will find 14 color combinations that will work for the plaid skirt. Let me know in the comments below which combination your chose!
Cornsilk / Tigerlily / Berry Red
Eggshell / Terracotta / Berry Red
Holly Berry / Berry Red / Black
White / Bubble Gum / Hot Pink
White / Bubble Gum / Papaya
Wow! That is a lot of color combinations and I am sure you can find even more in this color line. Don’t forget to also pick an accent color for the waistband!
Fall Baby Dress Size
When choosing a size, I recommend paying attention to the head size and chest size, the length will be very easy to adjust. Since this dress has no buttons up the back or fasteners, it is important that you choose a size that will comfortably slip over the child’s head. Check out the measurements below to help you choose a size.
Note: 3 Month = 0-3 Months
I combined sizes 12 and 18 months to keep a clean stitch count and omitted the 9 month size for the same reason.

Time to Talk about Gauge!
Now I know that gauge is a step that most people skip, and on a lot of projects it is ok to skip gauge. But each and everyone of us is unique and we all crochet with a different tension. Because of this our final projects will come out a different size.
When creating a garment, like this dress, it is important to take the time to make a gauge swatch and check your gauge. If you are not familiar with how to do this, that is ok! I made a video to walk you through the process. Just work up the gauge pattern below and watch the video!

Do we have to use those color ways you wrote above or can we pick something different?
Going yarn shopping on Friday ?
You can use any color you like! I just wanted to provide options to get the plaid effect.
What a lovely pattern, thanks for sharing this with us at Handmade Monday. Pinning.
I would like to make this little dress for my great niece, but would like to make it out of cotton yarn. Would that work?

Yes, you just need to check to make sure your gauge matches.
