When designing the Simply Fall Baby Dress a plaid skirt was a must. Nothing really says fall like orange and red leaves, pumpkins and plaid. Plaid has become very popular in the crochet world and I just had to try my hand at making something plaid.
It turns out making a plaid design is very easy. It just takes three colors of varying shades and follow a simple repetitive pattern.
I am so thrilled that we will be working on this baby dress as a community. If you want to crochet a long with us, make sure you join the Our Crochet Journey Facebook Group to share your photos and spread encouragement through this event.
If you have stumbled upon this page and it is your first time hearing about this Crochet A Long it is not too late to join in on the fun. Just jump back to Part 1 and 2. It will only take you about an hour to get caught up to the rest of us!

Creating the Plaid
I will be using one pattern for all sizes. The only difference you will have it the stitch count which I will show in the chart below and how many rows you will work. The first and last row is worked the same for all sizes, the middle numbers of rows will change depending on size.
Keep in mind you are welcome to work more or less rows in the middle in order to make the dress as long or as short as you like.
Let’s talk about each row in a little more depth and how I plan to walk you through the plaid process.
First, in each row you will only be working with two colors. The first row will use the middle and lightest shade you have chosen. I will refer to the lightest shade as Color L, the middle shade as Color M and the Darkest shade as Color D.
This process works really well if you are using a dark, medium and light color. If you are using three colors that are next to each other on the color wheel like yellow, green and blue, you will use green as your middle color and simply assign one of the other colors as you light color and dark color.
To create a plaid design we will be alternating 4 double crochet of the Medium color with 4 double crochet of either the light or dark color.
Vertically and horizontally all rows will be alternating the Medium color with one of the other colors.
Watch the video to see how to change colors and how to carry your yarn so that you do not have many threads to weave in.
