Quilted to Crochet Table Runner and Placemats

My best friend quilts. Growing up, I was always helping my grandmother pick out the fabric and laying out squares for her quilts. I am just in love with quilt designs. It is probably not a surprise that this crochet table runner is inspired by a quilted table runner. You can probably imagine how the stripes for the tree could have been strips of material.

Instead of quilting our table runner together, we are just going to change colors when we need to. To give this quilt a multi-color ombre look without buying tons of yarn, we will be using the Red Heart Super Saver Ombre.

Customizing your Crochet Table Runner

When picking colors for this table runner I wanted something that would be a little subtle and could be more of a winter decor item than just a Christmas table runner. So I stuck with very cabin style woodsy colors.

The quilted design that inspired this piece actually used lots of colors for the tree stripes. You could make the stripes any color to match your holiday decor. I do like the idea of using teal, bright green, pink, and reds to make it more festive.

The crochet table runner and placemats would also look amazing with a modern farmhouse style using blacks, whites, grays, or browns. Get creative and make it match your holiday decor.

How to Change Colors

Creating an Ombre Effect

In this pattern, we will force the color changes. Red Heart’s Super Saver Ombre has nice long color changes, but they are too long for most of this project. After working the first 3 stripes in darkest color green we will need to fasten off and pull from the skein until the color begins to lighten.

Everyone’s colors may be a bit different. I was able to see 4 different shades of green on my skein of yarn and divided the stripes accordingly. My stripes went like this: 3 stripes the darkest green, 3 stripes medium green, 2 stripes light green, 2 stripes lightest green.

If you can only see 3 shades of green in your skein, then you can make your stripe like this: 4 stripes the darkest green, 3 stripes medium green, 3 stripes light green.

Save the yarn that you pull out of the skein while trying to get to the next color. Wind it into a ball and save it to use for the trees on the placemats. If you don’t want to force the color changes that is fine too, you will just have a more gradual ombre effect.

Ombre Holiday Crochet Table Runner

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH2, turning chain, as a stitch.
-We will create the table runner and placemat centers, then there will be the instructions for the border, which is the same for the table runner and placemats.
– For the Table Runner I forced the color changes, the striping information can be found above in the section called “Creating an Ombre Effect”.
– For this pattern, I only use 1 strand of white, and one strand of green at a time. I carry my yarn under all the stitches when it is not being used.

Holiday Crochet Placemats

Notes:
-For the placemats, I used one strand of white carried it throughout the project.
– I used 3 strands of green (one for each tree), I carried it under the white stitches on the all-white rows and left it with its designated tree, and carried the yarn up the backside of the project. I also used 2 strands of brown and did not carry the brown yarn at all.

Creating a Border for the Crochet Table Runner and Placemats

The first step for creating our border is to make a single crochet border around the entire project using the white that is still attached to your piece.

Single Crochet Border

CH1, turn so you are working down the side of the rows, work 2 SC into the side of each row, CH2 when you reach the corner, working into the opposite side of the starting CH, work 2 SC into each CH, CH2, when you reach the corner, turn so you are working down the side of the rows, work 2 SC into the side of each row, CH2 when you reach the corner, SC into each ST of the last row worked before the border rows.

When you reach your first corner, CH2 and SLST to the first SC. Fasten off.

If you need help with this border, here is a video tutorial for how to create a single crochet border around a project.

Make a modern ombre crochet table runner and matching placemats. Free crochet pattern with helpful video tutorials. Perfect for all winter.

Camel Stitch Border

Now we are ready to create our fancier border which is a camel stitch border. It is a simple half double crochet border, but we will be working the half double crochets into the third loop (or back middle bar) or the stitch. Below is a video tutorial on how to do this border and the written pattern will be below that. Please note that the written pattern varies a little from the video tutorial but both methods work wonderfully.

Camel Stitch Border
Notes: You may want to use a stitch marker to mark the corner stitches, which will be the center stitch of the 3 Half Double Crochets worked in the corner.

Using Burgundy, SLST to any corner CH2 space.

Row 1: CH 1, Work 2 HDC into corner Space, Work a HDC into every ST down the first side, *Work 3 HDC into the CH2 space, Work a HDC into every ST down the next side,* repeat from *to* a total of 3 times. Work 1 HDC into starting corner, SLST to first HDC.

Note: Your ‘corner ST’ refer to the center stitch of the 3 HDC worked in the corners.

Row 2: CH 1, Work 2 HDC into corner Space, Work a HDC in the 3rd loop into every ST down the first side, *Work 3 HDC into the Corner ST, Work a HDC in the 3rd loop into every ST down the next side,* repeat from *to* a total of 3 times. Work 1 HDC into starting corner, SLST to first HDC.

You will continue to repeat row 2 until you have 3 total rows of burgundy on the placemats and 5 total rows of burgundy for the table runner.

Fasten off after your last slip stitch and weave in all your ends.

Blocking you Placemats and Table Runner

After working this project the finished pieces really did not need to be blocked except for the corner. Just dip each corner in water and pat it dry with a towel. Then gently pull on the corner until it has a sharper point. Lay it flat to dry and your crochet table runner and placemats should be ready to use.
