Halloween Stack of Pumpkins Crochet Centerpiece

Crocheting for the holidays and seasons can be so much fun. This design is a spin-off of my Fall Centerpiece with more of a Halloween theme. The base pattern is very easy. The pumpkins are made from basic rectangles and then gathered and sewn into a pumpkin shape. I added the extra Halloween elements to this version.

Substituting Yarn and Picking your Colors

Any yarn can be used for this pattern. Larger yarns will create larger pumpkins and smaller yarns will make smaller pumpkins. You will just want to make sure you use the same size yarn for all three pumpkins in the crochet stacked pumpkin pattern.

You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

Fasten off. The last two slip stitches will help smooth out the edge of the hat. The hat will be sewn to the top of the small pumpkin.

I completely forgot to do this to my pumpkin hat, but if you like, use yellow yarn to embroider a yellow rectangle buckle on the front of the hat.

Pumpkin Leaves

Note: This pattern is worked in joined rounds. I do not count my turning chain as a stitch.

With Medium Thyme (Medium Green):

Row 1: CH2, Work 12 DC into a Magic Circle. SLST to the first DC. (12 DC)

Work a (TR, DC, HDC) into the last ST. CH1, SLST to the last ST.

Stem: From where you left off on Row 2, CH 8, and fasten off. (Add more or fewer chains to adjust the length of your leaf stem.)

Weave in your starting yarn end. Leave a long yarn end at the end of the leaf stem to sew the leaf to the pumpkin.

Pumpkin Vines (Make 2 or more)

Note: You can adjust the starting chain to make the vine longer or shorter. Any number of starting chains will work for this pattern.

With Tea Leaf (Light Green) CH 25

Row 1: Work 2 SC into the second CH from the hook, Work 2 SC into each CH across.

Fasten off leaving an 8-inch yarn end to sew your vine to your pumpkin. You can leave the vine as is for the most curl or lightly stretch the vine to make it longer and have a looser curl.

Adding a Face to your Jack O’Lanterns

Now we will add the face to the pumpkins. Take the black felt and cut out 3 jack-o-lantern pumpkin faces. I have provided a template below if you would like to use the same faces as the pumpkin in the photos.

Lightly stretch your pumpkin bases. The bases will get stretched when they are stuffed and we want the faces to look the same as when we added them. Sew the felt pumpkin faces to the center of each pumpkin base. Aim to sew the faces to the middle third of the pumpkin base both vertically and horizontally.

You also have the option of gluing the faces in place. I did this with the pumpkins in the photos because I could not find black thread.

Gathering your Crochet Stacked Pumpkin Jack O’Lanterns

Now we are going to turn our rectangles into pumpkins. I used a small handful of glass gems in the bottom of each pumpkin to give it a little weight. This is optional.

Instructional photo for how to sew and gather the crochet pumpkins.

Step 1: Sew a gathering stitch along the bottom of the pumpkin and pull tight.

Step 2: Make 2 stitches to secure the gather and close up the bottom of the pumpkin.

Instructional photo for how to sew and gather the crochet pumpkins.

Step 3: Use a whip stitch to sew the first and last row of the pumpkin base together.

Step 4: When you reach the top of your pumpkin, knot your two yarn ends together to secure.

Step 5: Sew a gathering stitch around the top of the pumpkin. Stuff your pumpkin. Pull the gathering stitch tight to close the top. ( If you like you can add something to the inside bottom of the pumpkin to weigh it down.)

Step 6: Knot the two yarn ends together to secure the gather.

Step 7: Optional: Sew the stem to the top of your pumpkin.

For the crochet jack-o-lanterns, we will be cinching down the center of the pumpkin.

Steps 1 and 2: Use a yarn needle to thread your yarn ends from the top to the bottom of the pumpkin.

Step 3: Pull the yarn ends tight and knot them together. Clip your yarn ends and hide them inside the pumpkin.

Step 4: Sew leaves and vines to the top of the pumpkin.

Now your cinched pumpkin is complete.

Decorating the Crochet Stacked Pumpkin Jack-O-Lanterns

Start by sewing the hat to the top of the smallest pumpkin. If you like you can add some leaves and vines and have them peeking out under the hat.

Stack the three pumpkins from largest to smallest and gently tuck the vines and leaves in between each set of pumpkins. Then gently remove each pumpkin and sew the leaves and vines in place.

You have the option to sew the three pumpkins together. I leave them unsewn so that they store easier.

Now your Crochet Stacked Pumpkin Jack O’Lanterns are complete and ready to be enjoyed. This project looks great in the center of your table, on a shelf, or entryway table.
