Making a Skeleton Pumpkin
We just keep adding to the pumpkin collection. This skeleton gets to come out and stay with us all October.

A Beginner Friendly Crochet Skeleton Pumpkin?
I really wanted to make this pattern as easy as it could be so that everyone who wanted one could have a crochet skeleton pumpkin. To say this is a beginner-friendly pattern would be wrong, but I do believe it is an easy pattern.
If you are a beginner and you are comfortable with the basic stitches, then I think you will be able to complete this pattern with the instructional photos, video, and pattern below. Here are some of the easy skills you will learn to complete this pattern.
Working in the Back Loops Only – This is demonstrated in the fox pumpkin video tutorial and is a very easy skill to learn. This created the beautiful ribbed texture of the pumpkin.
The Magic Circle – This is used to create a tight ring for the beginning of a project that will be a half-circle or cylinder. We will use it for the stem. It can be a bit tricky to learn but several people have told me my method makes it easy. I will also provide an alternative to using this technique.
Working in Continuous Rounds – This is easier than it sounds. You will just work in a spiral pattern and use a stitch marker to mark the end of your row. This is also demonstrated in the fox pumpkin video tutorial.

Crochet Skeleton Pumpkin Pattern
Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my turning chain as a stitch.
– The Crochet Skeleton Pumpkin pattern is copyrighted by Winding Road Crochet.
– This pattern has a right and wrong side to the pattern. You can make either side the wrong side of the pattern. The wrong side will be the side of the pattern where you carry your yarn behind your work. (Photo below)
– The Skeleton mouth is not symmetrical. He is meant to have a crooked smile.
Crochet SkeletonPumpkin Base
CH 36 with White Leave a long yarn end at the beginning of your work. This will be used to gather the bottom of the pumpkin and sew up the side.
Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from the hook. SC in next 34 CH.
Row 2-19: CH1, turn, BLOSC in next 35 STs.
Note: From Row 20 – 44 you will change colors in every row. From now on all SC are worked in the Back Loops Only, I am dropping the BLO to save space. Yarn will be carried on the back of our work.

Fasten off leaving a 20-inch long yarn end. This yarn end will be used to sew up the side of the pumpkin and gather the top of the pumpkin.
Use charcoal yarn and a yarn needle to sew stitches on the skeleton’s mouth.
Crochet Pumpkin Stem
Notes:
-We will be working in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the last stitch of each row to help you keep track of your rows.
-If you do not know how to make a magic circle check out this video.
Round 1: With Green: Work 6 SC into Magic Circle (6SC)
Alternative Round 1: CH2, Work 6 SC into 2nd CH from hook. (6SC) (Use this row 1 if you do not know how to make a magic circle.)
Round 2: *Work 2SC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. (12SC)
Round 3: BLOSC in next 12 STs. (12SC)
Round 4-7: SC in next 12 STs (12SC)
Fasten off leaving 12 inch yarn end.
Assembling the Crochet Skeleton Pumpkin
Sewing, Gathering, and Adding the Stem to the Pumpkin
Now we will turn our rectangle into a pumpkin! You can use a whip stitch or blanket stitch to join the sides of the pumpkin. The photos below are from the owl pumpkin pattern but the technique is the same.
Step 1: Using the yarn end at the bottom of the pumpkin, sew a gathering stitch along the bottom edge of the pumpkin.
Step 2: Pull the gathering stitch tight. Make a few extra stitches to close the bottom of the pumpkin if needed.
Step 3: Whipstitch the first and last row of the skeleton base together.
Step 4: Make a knot at the top of the side seam to secure it. (You can knot your yarn end with the starting yarn end.)
Step 5: Run a gathering stitch along the top of the pumpkin and stuff your pumpkin.
Step 6: Pull the gathering stitch closed and secure the top of the pumpkin. (Do not clip your yarn ends.)
Step 7: Lightly stuff the stem and whipstitch the stem over the gathering at the top of the pumpkin with your green yarn ends.
Step 8: Weave in your green yarn ends. The white yarn ends will be used to cinch down the pumpkin.
Cinching Down Your Pumpkin
To give the skeleton pumpkin a little more of a pumpkin shape we will cinch the pumpkin down a little. Just follow the instructions below. (Photos from the Small Pumpkins and Gourds pattern pattern.)
Step 9: Use a yarn needle to thread your yarn ends from the top to the bottom of the pumpkin.
Step 10: Pull the yarn ends tight and knot them together.
Step 11: Clip your yarn ends and hide them inside the pumpkin.
