Making a Deer Pumpkin
We just keep adding to the critter pumpkin family. This deer is so cute with his big eyes.
This is not the first character pumpkin I have designed. You can find a cute fox pumpkin, unicorn pumpkin, owl pumpkin, and moose pumpkin here on the blog.
A Beginner Friendly Crochet Deer Pumpkin?
I really wanted to make this pattern as easy as it could be so that everyone who wanted one could have a crochet deer pumpkin. To say this is a beginner-friendly pattern would be wrong, but I do believe it is an easy pattern.
If you are a beginner and you are comfortable with the basic stitches, then I think you will be able to complete this pattern with the instructional photos, video, and pattern below. Here are some of the easy skills you will learn to complete this pattern.
Working in the Back Loops Only – This is demonstrated in the fox pumpkin video tutorial and is a very easy skill to learn. This created the beautiful ribbed texture of the pumpkin.
The Magic Circle – This is used to create a tight ring for the beginning of a project that will be a circle or cone. We will use it for the stem. It can be a bit tricky to learn but several people have told me my method makes it easy. I will also provide an alternative to using this technique.
Working in Continuous Rounds – This is easier than it sounds. You will just work in a spiral pattern and use a stitch marker to mark the end of your row. This is also demonstrated in the fox pumpkin video tutorial.
Crocheting into the side of rows – I have a video tutorial on how to do this for every type of stitch, but we will just be working with single crochet. Single crochet rows are the easiest to work into the side of but this part is also optional. Though the ears of the deer pumpkin will look much nicer if you learn this skill.
Bonus Subscriber Exclusive Pattern!
Isn’t this mini wolf version adorable? It takes under an hour to crochet and would make an excellent gift. It was supposed to be a grey fox, but he definitely looks like a little wolf. This pattern is a gift to my newsletter subscribers for the support they have shown me over the years. You can grab it too by signing up for the Winding Road Crochet Newsletter.
The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern
Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

When you fasten off your white, leave a long yarn end to use to gather up the bottom of the pumpkin.
Crochet Deer Pumpkin Ears (Make 2)
With Brown CH2.
Row 1: Work 2 SC into 2nd CH from Hook. (2SC)
Row 2: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first ST. Work 2 SC in next ST. (4SC)
Row 3: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first ST. SC in next 3 STs. (5SC)
Row 4: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first ST. SC in next 4 STs. (6SC)
Row 5: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first ST. SC in next 5 STs. (7SC)
Row 6: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first ST. SC in next 6 STs. (8SC)
Row 7-9: CH1, turn, SC in next 8 STs. (8SC)
Row 10-12: CH1, turn, SC in next 8 STs. (8SC)
The final row is optional but gives the ears a nice smooth look.
Final Row: CH1, turn so you are working down the side of the rows. Work 1 SC into the side of each row, when you reach the top of the ear CH2, and then work a SC into the other side of each row. When you reach the bottom of the second side, fasten off leaving a long yarn end to sew the ears to the base of the pumpkin.
Cut out a piece of felt that is smaller than the crocheted ears and use embroidery thread to sew them onto the ear. I sewed my stitches only halfway through the crocheted piece to keep the backside of the ear nice looking.
Before sewing the deer ears in place, use your yarn end to create a gathering stitch and gather up the bottom of the deer ear. This helps create the shape of the ear.
Crochet Pumpkin Stem
Notes:
-We will be working in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the last stitch of each row to help you keep track of your rows.
Row 1: With Brown or Green: Work 6 SC into Magic Circle (6SC)
Alternative Row 1: CH2, Work 6 SC into 2nd CH from hook. (6SC)
Row 2: *Work 2SC in next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. (12SC)
Row 3: BLOSC in next 12 STs. (12SC)
Row 4-7: SC in next 12 STs (12SC)
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Assembling the Crochet Deer Pumpkin
Adding a Face
Take your felt and cut out two eyes and a nose and inner ears for your pumpkin. Take your pumpkin base and stretch it out a bit so that it is wider. When we stuff the pumpkin it will get stretched out and we want the eyes and nose to still be in place. Using embroidery thread sew them onto the pumpkin base.
Sewing, Gathering, and Adding the Stem to the Pumpkin
Now we will turn our rectangle into a pumpkin! You can use a whip stitch or blanket stitch to join the sides of the pumpkin.
Step 1: Using the yarn end at the bottom of the pumpkin, sew a gathering stitch along the bottom edge of the pumpkin.
Step 2: Pull the gathering stitch tight. Make a few extra stitches to close the bottom of the pumpkin if needed.
Step 3: Whipstitch the first and last row of the deer base together.
Step 4: Make a knot at the top of the side seam to secure it.
Step 5: Run a gathering stitch along the top of the pumpkin and stuff your pumpkin.
Step 6: Pull the gathering stitch closed and secure the top of the pumpkin.
Step 7: Lightly stuff the stem and whipstitch the stem over the gathering at the top of the pumpkin.
Step 8: Weave in all yarn ends.
Adding a Crochet Deer Ears
All we need to do is use the yarn end that we left ourselves and sew the ears to the pumpkin. My ears sit about 1 inch away from the stem of the pumpkin and I curved the ears just slightly to give them a more natural look.
Ok, that is it, your pumpkin is done! She is the perfect soft and plushy decoration that can stay out all fall and winter long. I really hope you loved this pattern and will check out the other crochet patterns on the Winding Road Crochet Blog.
