Decorate your holiday table with a beautiful set of ribbed crochet placemats. This free crochet pattern will walk you through how to crochet this easy solid color placemat and a ribbed border placemat with a pumpkin design.
Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this Ribbed Crochet Placemat pattern. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge, video tutorial, and sizing information. The patterns for a solid color and pumpkin placemat are below.
A Simple and Advanced Crochet Placemat
I love creating variety in a single pattern. This crochet placemat can be made as a solid color and be beautiful. You can also work a graphed design into the center of the placemat for a little extra special touch.
Adding a Graphed Design
The center of the placemat is 36 stitches tall and 55 rows wide. You can use these numbers to create a graphed design at Stitch Fiddle. Then work that graphed design into your placemat.
There are just a few things to consider when making your picture graph. First, the graph is worked side to side instead of bottom to top. Simple shapes work best, and fewer colors make the graphed section crochet up faster.
Also, consider how much space you want to use for the picture. Your graphed picture can be as big as 36 stitches tall and 55 stitches wide but most of this will be covered by the plate. The pumpkin in the pattern below is only 22 stitches tall and 26 rows wide. You don’t have to fill up the entire placemat with a photo.
Consider making a crochet placemat with a Christmas tree and use buttons for ornaments or Easter eggs and embroider stripes on them. The possibilities are endless.
The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern
Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

Embroidering Extra Details
Use the brown (coffee) yarn and a yarn needle to embroider a line around the edge of the pumpkin, leaf, and stem. This will create a more defined edge in the picture. Use the same color to create curved lines down the center of the pumpkin to create the pumpkin segments. If you are new to embroidering on crochet then check out this video tutorial. To create a solid line, use a backstitch as seen in the embroidery video or follow the alternative technique below.
For this technique, you will simply sew a running stitch or a standard back and forth stitch around the pumpkin outline.
Then you will work the second round of stitches making stitches over the spaces that were left in the first round. The benefit of this method is that it results in the back and front of the embroidery looking the same.
If you can start and end the embroidering near the stem of the pumpkin then you can weave your ends into the same color of stitches.
You can also work lines of embroidery down the middle of the pumpkin making the segments of the pumpkin. Use the same technique stitching down the pumpkin first then back up, making stitches in the spaces left behind.
Once the entire pumpkin is outlined, weave in your yarn ends.
Now your Ribbed Crochet Placemat is complete and ready to be enjoyed. They can be made in any color and for any holiday.
