This any stitch Tunisian Crochet Ear Warmer is the third practice crochet pattern in the Tunisian Crochet Course. Below you will find step by step tutorial that will walk you through how to crochet this ear warmer in 4 different styles. Instead of using a gauge for this pattern, we will use dimensions to get the correct sizing.
How to Change the Pattern not the Hook
Since this pattern is apart of the Tunisian crochet course, I am going to assume that you only have one Tunisian crochet hook. That was all that was required for the course. But in order to adjust your gauge (which we learned about in Lesson 5), you would need to adjust your hook size.
Instead, let’s discuss how to adjust a simple pattern. What I recommend is that you work up the first two rows of your crochet project, then measure your project. I will explain pattern adjustments using the Tunisian crochet washcloth. The Tunisian crochet portion of this washcloth should be 9″x9″. I worked up two samples and as you can see my pink sample is 10 inches wide and my teal sample is 8 inches wide. Both are 1 inch off the ideal size. If your project is not the right size, then we need to adjust our foundation chain to accommodate the difference.
Both samples are one inch off the desired size. So I measured out how many stitches it takes to equal an inch. In this case, it is 3 stitches. So for the teal sample, I would start the project over and add 3 extra chains to the foundation chain. For the pink sample, I would start the project over and subtract 3 chains from the foundation chain.
The important part is that the pattern turns out the correct size and not that the pattern is followed exactly. For the ear warmer, we are aiming for the height of the ear plus 1 inch. For a child, this may mean 3.5 inches wide but for an adult, it may be 4.5 inches wide. I have included a chart below for all the dimensions. We will want to make the length of the ear warmer 2 inches less than the circumference of the wearer’s head.
How to Weave in your Ends
In Tunisian crochet you can weave in your ends into the back bulk of the stitches. This is similar to regular crochet, but we do want to take into consideration the way the piece will be stretched. Below is two photos showing which way to weave in you ends based on how the finished project will stretch. The pink arrow shows the direction of stretch and the teal line show which directions to weave in your ends.

Size and Gauge
Instructions will be provided for many different sizes and you will be able to adjust this to make a custom size. For this pattern, we are not concerned with the gauge. Instead, we will crochet until we reach a certain measurement, so keep your measuring tape nearby.
Tunisian Crochet Ear Warmer Construction
We will be crocheting a simple rectangle to the dimensions listed for the size you are making. Then we will use one of 4 methods to turn our rectangle into an ear warmer. Each method will give you a different style of ear warmer.
Step 1: Crochet a Rectangle
Notes:
-For the width of the ear warmer I recommend 1 inch taller than the wearer’s ear. For a child 3.5 inches wide and for an adult 4.5 inches wide.
-For the length of the headband, I recommend 2 inches less than the circumference of the wearer’s head, or you can use the size chart above to determine the length.
-After 2-3 rows check your width and see if you need to make any adjustments. Use the instructions above to make adjustments.
- Chain 12 for a Child size and 16 for an Adult and complete a foundation row as normal.
- Work rows of either Tunisian simple stitch, Tunisian Knit Stitch, or Tunisian Full Stitch, until your project measures the correct length for the size you are making.
Toddler – 15 inches
Child – 17 inches
Teen – 19 inches
Small Adult – 20 inches
Adult – 21 inches - Work a Single Crochet bind off row to complete your ear warmer.
- Fasten off leaving a very long yarn end to sew up the ends of the ear warmer. Pick a style below and follow the directions to finish your ear warmer.
Step 2: Sew up your Tunisian Ear Warmer
Simple Ear Warmer
Bring your two short ends together and use the long tail end and a whip stitch to sew the ends together. Weave in your ends. This will create a simple ear warmer like the photo below and that is great for guys.
Cinched Ear Warmer
Bring your two short ends together and use the long tail end and a whip stitch to sew the ends together. Then pinch down the center of the seam and use the long tail end to wrap around the pinched area several times. Tie a knot on the inside of the ear warmer and weave in your end. This will create a ear warmer like the one in the photo below.
Simple Twisted Ear Warmer
Lay your ear warmer flat. Take one side and flip it over to create a twist in the center of the ear warmer. Bring your two short ends together and use the long tail end and a whip stitch to sew the ends together. Weave in your ends. This will create and ear warmer like the photo below, but note that half of the ear warmer will be exposing the back of your stitch work.
Modern Twisted Ear Warmer
For this ear warmer we will be creating a twist with the two ends of our rectangle then securing it with our yarn end.
Step 1: Place your two ends together so they are halfway overlapping with your left side end under your right side end.
Step 2: Fold the other half of your left side end over the folded section of your right side end.
Step 3: Fold your right side end over the left side so that it resembles step 3 in the picture above.
Step 4: Use your long yarn end and a needle to sew a row of stitches that goes through all 4 layers. I like to sew back and forth a few times to secure these layers together.
Step 5: Weave in your ends and turn your twisted ear warmer inside out.
When you are down it should resemble the photo below.
