Puff Stitch Crochet Toddler Dress Free Pattern

Babies turn into toddlers so fast and once they learn to walk it is the perfect time to start making a crochet toddler dress. When my girl decided walking was better than crawling, I knew I needed to design a dress for her.

The problem is that there are so many cute details you can add to a little crochet dress. So I turned to my wonderful crochet community to help me decide. Over the course of a week, together we decided on all the details for this little crochet toddler dress.

Get the free crochet pattern below or purchase the Ad-Free Large Font Printable PDF for $3.49 here.

In order to have fun working with lots of color, but not requiring a lot of different skeins of yarn, we decided to use the Caron Pantone Bamboo yarn. It comes in these cute little packs with 5 colors of yarn. I needed to use 2 skeins for the 12 month size dress and 3 skeins will need to be used for the larger toddler dress sizes.

When choosing the details of this dress, the community voted on Facebook and Instagram. The final votes decided that we would make a halter style top, an A-line skirt with puff stitch details, and a mini arcade trim.

I have to say I am a little blown away by how adorable this dress came out. If you want me to have another Community Design It pattern like this one just let me know in the comments below.

If you love the Puff Stitch dress you may also like the Tulip Crochet Dress. This similar style of dress has a simpler design. It has more sizes from size 12 months to girl’s size 8. It can also be made into a summer top or crop top.

Crochet Toddler Dress Sizes

This pattern provide three sizes: 12 months, 18 months and 24 months.
The smaller size will be the first number provided in the pattern and the other two sizes will be in parenthesis. 12 months( 18 months, 24 months) Check the measurements below to help decide which size dress to make. All dresses can be adjusted by about an inch in the waist by wear you place the buttons.

Size measurements:
12 Months – 19 inches waist
18 Months – 20.5 inches waist
24 Months – 22 inches waist

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch – *Yarn over, insert your hook into the next Stitch and pull up a loop* repeat from *to* a total of 5 times. (This will result in 10 loops on your hook) Yarn over once more and pull that last loop through all the loops on your hook.

This creates the puff stitch, we will then Chain 1 to close the stitch. For this pattern this last chain will be referred to as the “closing chain or CCh”.

Puff Stitch Crochet Toddler Dress Pattern

Notes:
– I do not count my turning chain as a stitch.
– Written in US terms.
– For this pattern the Puff Stitch is actually treated as two stitches, the puff stitch and the closing chain. This helps with understanding which stitches to skip.

Go back to row 9. Slip stitch to the eighth stitch from the center of the back (where the flap is). Chain 23(25,29) and slip stitch to the two stitches in the corner of the front bodice on the same side. Repeat this for the strap on the other side of the bodice.

Your crochet toddler dress is now complete. They can wear this for summer or throw a shirt under it and wear leggings for a fun fall look.

  1. Hello, I’d like to thank you for sharing your beautiful patterns. I can’t wait to make this adorable (but not as adorable than your little one!) dress. Have a blessed day! Maggie. 🙂

  2. This dress came out beautiful, I can’t wait for my granddaughter (5mo) to be big enough to make this for her. The community event was fun, but I’d love to eventually see some of the other details also made into a dress, maybe if you run out of ideas for other patterns you could put some of the other items together for another summer dress for next year. Thanks so much for all your beautiful patterns.

  3. Love the dress and purchased the pattern but I wish you had written into the pattern when and how to change colors to match the photo.

    • If you go back to the site that you have purchased the pattern and redownload it, I have updated the patterns to including the color changes for the 12 month size.

  4. Hello, I am a beginner and just noticed the size of yarn on here requires 4, although what I currently have is a 3. Is there a way to adjust the way I do this to work with the size 3 yarn?! I’m having to make an outfit for a Size 24 month.
All/Any help is appreciative! Thank you,
    Ashley

    • There are two ideas. Since you are a beginner I would consider checking out the Tulip Dress. It is very similar in style but a bit easier and uses a size 3 yarn. The first thing you can try to adjust the yarn size is to see if you can get the same gauge with the size 3 yarn. You will have to work up a gauge sample a few times using different hooks to see if you can match the gauge. If you can match the gauge and you are happy with how the gauge sample looks then you can use the pattern as is with that yarn and size hook.

      Reply
  5. I had to get a different yarn because the one you use is discontinued. I am struggling to match the gauge. I’ve tried 4 different hook sizes and I’m still about a 1/2″ to long and about 1/4″ to high. Will that affect the size of the dress terribly? I am making the largest size that you have written the pattern for. Thank You!!

    Reply
    • Sometimes it is hard to match the gauge perfectly. Just pick the hook that meets the gauge as close as possible. You can always adjust where you put the buttons on the back to make the dress a little smaller. If you have two hooks that are close, then pick the hook based on what size you are trying to acheive. I would go slightly larger because you can adjust the button to make it fit a smaller waist.

  6. I finished this dress a couple weeks ago. I must admit I’m horrible at counting so I had to improvise a few times to keep the number of stitches per row somewhat accurate. But it was all on me and nothing to do with the pattern. It still turned out beautifully and my 17 month old loved it. She wore it when the three of us went to our anniversary dinner and she got several compliments on the dress from other costumers and restaurant staff. Thank you so much for this beautiful free pattern. I will subscribe and look forward to purchasing patterns from you in the near future.

  7. I am on the trim instructions, and I am struggling to make the sc’s match up with where they are at on the dress. I am making the largest size, so I’m not sure if I’m missing something or not. Can you please clarify the row 1 on the trim? Thank you!

    Reply
    • Can you send me a picture to windingroadcrochet@gmail.com ? Then I can see if you are following the instructions correctly and off-count somewhere or if there is something in the repeat that is not being understood. My first two thoughts is you might not be counting the Chain 1 spaces after the puff stitches as a stitch or you may be ending the repeat with an extra single crochet, but I can’t know that without seeing the project. Also, you can watch the video tutorial to see how the trim is worked. The visual may help you.

  8. I have had so much fun making this pattern so far, it is absolutely adorable too! I have just gotten to the trim (working on the largest size) and my numbers are not adding up what so ever. I have worked the first two trim rounds a couple times and keep ending up with quite more shells than suggested. It doesn’t look bad, but I’d like to better understand what I am doing wrong. I have 186 DC from the last row, but a bunch more in stitch total once I add in the puff, closing stitches, and chains. I was counting those as stitches, should I not have been? Thank you in advance.

    Reply
    • Here is what I am counting. When I count the stitches in row 29, I come up with 216. This is including double crochets, closing chains, puff stitches and chains all as a stitch. The number is fine. Just when you work Trim row 1, you will work the repeat 36 times (not 31). The rest of the trim rows should work correctly. You will just continue repeating until you reach the end of the row. I am not going to correct the pattern because 100s of people have successfully completed the pattern and if I adjust the pattern I am likely to make a much bigger error. So the pattern works, but the stitch count for that size is off. It is possible I wasn’t counting the closing chains and chain spaces as stitches (just the DC and the puff stitches) but that is not normally how I count. The number does add up correctly that way. Let me know if this helps you through the rest of the pattern.

  9. Hi Lindsey, many thanks for this absolutely adorable dress pattern which I have just come across browsing the web. I have a stash of 8 ply cotton yarn, (50%cotton, 50% acrylic) just wondering whether this would work & be suitable for a 18month old. Yarn states a 4mm crochet hook. If this is a possible substitute, could you advise me on the appropriate size I should work on please.
    Many thanks, much appreciated.
    Regards.

    Erica (Australia)

    • So with what I am looking up online, 8 ply is a weight #3 yarn. So you will need to use a size that is larger than 18 months. What size will depend on your gauge. What I do is start making the pattern and when I get to the waist I compare the measurement to the Craft Yarn Council’s size charts to see if the sizing is coming out correct.

      • HI Lindsey, many thanks for the info. My thoughts were a size larger. I’ll attempt your suggestion to the waist & gauge from there. This has been very helpful. I love your work & will definitely be doing the tulip dress as well, the color combination of these are gorgeous. Many thanks again.
        Kind regards

  10. I am making the 18 month size. At the end of row 27 I have 168 double crochet. My stich count is not working out for the trim. I continue to get 33 shells in the second row of the trim.

    Row 27: 168 double crochet + 6( 5 stiches per puff increase) = 196.
    the trim is a repeat of 6. 196/ 6= 33

I am so confused how the size 18 is supposed to have 28 shells in row 2 of the trim.

    I appreciate the help

    • I am seeing the same issue. Here is what I am seeing:
R2. Do not turn, Ch1, * SkSt, Sc to the St below the Ch1 Space. Skst, Work 7 Dc into the Ch3 Space* repeat from *to* a total of 30(31,32) times. Slst to the first Sc. 25 Shells (28,31)

For Row 2 a repeat includes 1 shell and we repeat the sequence 31 times for the 18 month size. So I would think you have 31 shells. I will have to look at it closer later to determine what is off. I think the shell count at the end was pulled from the previous row but that doesn’t make as much sense.

If you are getting 33 shells and the row ends cleanly then I would just go with that. We will not be doing any increasing in trim rows 3 and 4 so you should not come into any trouble in the pattern. You might just work the repeat a few more times.

  11. Thank you for the wonderful pattern of the Puff Stitch dress. I loved making this for my 12month old great-grand niece. Since I have never made a garment for a baby, I am wondering if the yarn weight is too heavy. It turned out so cute I hate to give up on sending it to her, but it kind of feels like a blanket dress! I used Lion Brand which is a size 4 acrylic yarn. I would like to make it over in bamboo yarn, but I only find bamboo yarn in size 3. I see from other questions you answered that I could use that size 3 yarn by adjusting hook size from making a gauge swatch. I do believe in gauge swatch making! Maybe I should just make it over. Do you think that yarn would work up too heavy? I wish I could share a photo.

    • You could try a bamboo yarn or a light cotton yarn. I really like Bernat cotton softee. It is a size 4 I believe but it is a thinner size 4. Natural fibers breathe a little better.

  12. Buonasera Lindsey 🙂
Questo abitino è meraviglioso! Pensi sia fattibile farlo per mia nipotina di 8 anni? Potresti indicarmi come adattarlo?
In attesa di tue preziose news, ti auguro una serata serena. Patty

    • To would be difficult to size up the pattern that much. You would need to figure out the starting width for the bodice then increase from there and then determine the width of the waist to knw how far to extend the pattern.
