Crochet Mailman Gnome Free Pattern

I know snail mail is not our favorite kind of mail. It is how we get advertising and bills. But without our mailman, we would not receive our Amazon packages or other online orders. So here is a little mailman gnome free crochet pattern to say thank you to our mailmen (and women).

Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this crochet mailman gnome. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge, and sizing information. If you would like all of this in a nicely formatted printable format, you can purchase the Ad-Free Large Print PDF Pattern.

Making the Mailman Gnome

The mailman gnome has a simple design. Just a little gnome with a curly beard from untwisting the strands of yarn. He has a cute mail carrier bag and a letter on his hat. If you have an extra stamp hanging around, that would look very cute on his hat as well. This little mailman gnome is ready to go to work and keep the mail coming your way.

Getting Creative with this pattern…

This crochet gnome pattern can be customized in a variety of ways. You can make the gnome a woman by adding braids instead of the beard.

Crochet Gnome Beard (Male Gnome)

CH12 with White.

Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from hook and each CH across. Fasten off. (11)

Cut 21  eight-inch strands of yarn for the beard. Group three strands together and attach them to the 7 center single crochet like you would add fringe to a scarf. (See Photo Below)

Before stuffing your gnome, sew your beard on to you gnome in a U shape. Make sure to leave room for the nose and keep the ends close to the edge of the top of the body to be able to hide them with the hat.

If you choose, braid your beard and secure with a small piece of yarn.

Give your beard a little trim to shape and lightly mist it with some water, style the beard and let it dry that way to hold that shape.

For the beard in the photos, I untwisted the yarn in the beard to have more hair-like strands.

Mailman Assembly Instructions

You can use a yarn needle and yarn to sew each piece together in the order listed below or you can hot glue the pieces together (this is what I did) if they are not going to be played with by kids.

1. Stuff and Sew Feet to the front of the gnome.
2. Sew the braids or beard onto the gnome. The beard will have the crocheted row shaped like a U. Style the beard and trim it.
3. Sew the nose on top of the beard or between the braids.
4. Sew arms onto the body. Place the bag around one arm and sew the bag strap in the place where the shoulder would be.
5. Sew or glue the little letter onto the mailman gnome’s hat.
6. Stuff the body and hat and sew the hat onto the body.
7. Enjoy your gnome!

I truly hope you enjoyed the crochet mailman gnome pattern and will check back for more fun crochet gnome patterns.

  1. This mailman is so awesome!! I showed it to my hubby, he has been a mailman for 28 years! He loved it! I am making it now! Thank you for doing this pattern and sharing it with us! I am just tickled pink! You rock girl! Oh and you must be a little psychic! Before he was a mailman he worked in a grocery store, he had to work both jobs in the beginning because I was 9 months pregnant and we had to have the insurance to pay for the baby in the other job! I did not mention that when I asked you to make the mailman gnome! You just read my mind! Lol!
