This crochet teacher gnome is for all the teachers out there that teach our children. As a kindergartner’s mother I really have come to appreciate all the care and effort teachers put into teaching our children. They are truly magically in how they hold kids attention and get them to learn, not just remember something for a few moments. Here is a little pattern that will make a great teacher’s gift at the end of the school year.
Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this crochet teacher gnome. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge, and sizing information. If you would like all of this in a nicely formatted printable format, you can purchase the Ad-Free Large Print PDF Pattern.
Inspiring the Crochet Teacher Gnome
Can you remember your favorite teacher? Most of us can. Teachers leave such an impression on us as we grow up. I can still name my first, third, and several art teachers. It is really great to let the teachers know you appreciate them. Let them know how great they are with a little crochet teacher gnome.
My son started elementary this year, and boy is there a lot for him to learn. I am just baffled at how he seems to soak it all up. It is all thanks to having a wonderful Kindergarten teacher.
Making a Girl Teacher Gnome
I know I made a male teacher gnome but it is very easy to make a female teacher gnome as well. Just check out the original Garden Gnome Couple for the braids pattern and instructions.
Embroidering on Crochet
You will see that I have added some extra details to our crocheted pieces with embroidery. Embroidering on crochet can be a bit tricky, so check out my tips and tricks in this embroidery video tutorial.

Purchase the Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern
Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a print out of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted ad-free large font PDF version of the pattern. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag or basket.
I moved all the photos to the end of the PDF so you can reference them as you needed them and print just the pattern without using up as much ink. The Premium PDF version of the pattern can be purchased on Etsy.

You will want to embroider your hat before attaching it to the gnome. I embroidered “1, 2, 3” and “E = mc 2“. I also cut an apple shape out of a little bit of red felt and embroidered a stem with brown embroidery floss.

Crochet Gnome Beard
CH12 with White.
Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from hook and each CH across. Fasten off. (11)
Cut 21 eight-inch strands of yarn for the beard. Group three strands together and attach them to the 7 center single crochet like you would add fringe to a scarf. (See Photo Below)
Before stuffing your gnome, sew your beard on to you gnome in a U shape. Make sure to leave room for the nose and keep the ends close to the edge of the top of the body to be able to hide them with the hat.
If you choose, braid your beard and secure with a small piece of yarn.
Give your beard a little trim to shape and lightly mist it with some water, style the beard and let it dry that way to hold that shape.
If you wish, you can untwist the yarn in the beard to have more hair-like strands.
Mini Chalk Board
CH5 with Black
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook. SC in next 3 CH. (4)
Row 2-3: CH1, turn, Sc in next 4 STS.
From here you will change colors to medium brown and SC around the entire project. Here is a handy video tutorial showing how to SC into the side of a row.
Row 4: CH1, turn so that you are working down the side of the row, Work a SC into the side of each row, CH2 at the corner, Work 4 Sc into the opposite side of the starting CH. CH2 at the corner, Work a SC into the side of each row, CH2, work a SC into each ST of row 3. CH2, SLST to the first SC.
Fasten off and weave in your ends. Use embroidery thread to embroider something onto the chalk board. I embroidered “ABC”.
Teacher Gnome Assembly Instructions
You can use a yarn needle and yarn to sew each piece together in the order listed below or you can hot glue the pieces together (this is what I did) if they are not going to be played with by kids.
1. Stuff and Sew Feet to the front of the gnome.
2. Place the beard on the front body with the crocheted row formed into a U shape. Sew to the body.
3. Sew the nose on top of the beard.
4. Style the beard and trim it.
5. Sew Arms to the chalkboard, then sew onto the body.
6. Stuff the body add sew the hat onto the body. (Make sure to embroider the hat first)
7. Enjoy your gnome!
I truly hope you enjoyed the crochet teacher gnome pattern and will check back for more fun crochet gnome patterns.

The equation is E = mc^2
Yes, I am aware. I even spent quite a while looking up how to type it on my computer, but somehow amongst the chaos of homeschooling and working my wires got crossed and I embroidered it wrong. I made sure the instructions have the right equation.
This is precious! I love all your gnomes. Your patterns make them look easy. I am hesitant to try all the little pieces, but I love that you suggest hot glue! Keep up the great work.
I am so happy you enjoy it. The red yarn makes this one tricky because red seems to be thicker than other colors.
Hey I love these gnomes so stinking cute! Have you thought about making a board/card game gnome?
I have not. I would have to think about it. Off the top of my head, it would just be a basic gnome with little pape cards in its hands and maybe card symbols on its hat(spades, hearts, diamonds).
