Can you imagine how brave you have to be to run into a burning building? Firefighters are beyond brave and truly heroes for what they do. They sign up for their job knowing they will be putting themselves in danger. This crochet firefighter gnome pattern is in honor of all the brave firefighters in the world.
Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this crochet firefighter gnome. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge, and sizing information. If you would like all of this in a nicely formatted printable format, you can purchase the Ad-Free Large Print PDF Pattern.
The Brave Firefighter Gnome
I truly hope you never have to experience seeing a building on fire. Sadly, I have. A year after I got married and moved out of my childhood home, that home went up in flames. I can not explain to fear that went through my sister and me as we raced home. We couldn’t get a hold of our parents and had no idea if anyone was in the home.
We were so grateful to the firefighters that put out our home. Luckily, no one was inside and the firefighters did not have to brave the flames that day.
These brave men fought back the flames engulfing our home and because of them, we were able to salvage our family photos and many other precious belongings. All I can say is “Thank You.”
It is hard to lose your home, but it also puts your life into perspective. It is the memories you have made and the people in your lives that matter and not the things you collect. When we were allowed to enter or home again, we had over 50 volunteers of family and friends to help us catalog all our belongings. We were very grateful.
How to Customize your Gnome
This crochet gnome pattern can be customized in a variety of ways. You can make the gnome a woman by adding the braids instead of a beard.
Change the shirt, and pants colors to any color you like. Firefighters often wear a black and yellow uniform with a yellow hat. You can also make the whole gnome red for a more traditional firefighter. You can change the gnome’s skin color and hair color as well. I like to use Red Heart Super Saver Aran(light tones), Buff(Medium tone), Cafe Latte(Dark tone), and Coffee(Very dark tone) for skin tones.

Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a print out of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted ad-free large font PDF version of the pattern. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag or basket.
I moved all the photos to the end of the PDF so you can reference them as you needed them and print just the pattern without using up as much ink. The Premium PDF version of the pattern can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry.

Fasten off leaving a 10 inch tail to sew the nose to the body.
Firefighter Hose
Take a 1 foot piece of black duct tape and lay it flat with the sticky side up. Carefully fold 1/4 of the tape lengthwise over onto itself. Fold the tape again, 1/4 of the tape lengthwise onto itself. Repeat this once more.
We are basically folding this up into the hose shape. Then wrap your duct tape hose around two fingers to make the wound up hose and use a little glue (I used hot glue) to hold it in place.
Take a small piece of felt and roll it up into a cone. Fold one end of the duct tape hose so that it will fit inside the cone and use a little glue to hold everything in place.
Crochet Gnome Beard (Male Gnome)
CH12 with Dusty Grey.
Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from hook and each CH across. Fasten off. (11)
Cut 21 eight-inch strands of yarn for the beard. Group three strands together and attach them to the 7 center single crochet like you would add fringe to a scarf. (See Photo Below)
Before stuffing your gnome, sew your beard on to you gnome in a U shape. Make sure to leave room for the nose and keep the ends close to the edge of the top of the body to be able to hide them with the hat.
If you choose, braid your beard and secure with a small piece of yarn.
Give your beard a little trim to shape and lightly mist it with some water, style the beard and let it dry that way to hold that shape.
If you wish, you can untwist the yarn in the beard to have more hair-like strands.
Braids (Make 2) (For Female Gnome)
CH7 with Gold
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd Ch from hook and each Ch across. Fasten off. (6)
Cut 12 10 inch strands of gold yarn for the two braids. Attach one strand of yarn to each Single Crochet like you would attach fringe to a scarf. Grab 3 groups of four strands and braid the hair together. Use a piece of yarn to secure the braids at the bottom. Sew the braids onto the body of the gnome before stuffing the gnome.
Crochet Firefighter Gnome Assembly Instructions
You can use a yarn needle and yarn to sew each piece together in the order listed below or you can hot glue the pieces together (this is what I did) if they are not going to be played with by kids.
1. Stuff and Sew Feet to the front of the gnome.
2. Sew the beard onto the gnome. (If making a man) The beard will have the crocheted row shaped like a U. Style the beard and trim it.
3. Sew the arms onto the gnome and sew the hose to one of the gnome’s hands.
4. Sew the braids onto the gnomes (if making a woman). I sewed these directly on top of the arms but you can position them where you think they look best.
5. Sew the nose on top of the beard or between the braids.
6. Stuff the body and hat and sew the hat onto the body.
7. Enjoy your gnome!
I truly hope you enjoyed the crochet firefighter gnome pattern and will check back for more fun crochet gnome patterns.

You are very very VERY welcome. I just love what I do and that I can be home with the kids playing with harm. It is a lot of work but I am doing what I love and it is all because you wonderful people come and visit my website. So thank you!
My cousin was a firefighter for 44years. He would like the fireman . He has retired.
Tell him thank you for his brave service to the community from me. I hope he really enjoys it.
This is so cute n I’m sure my son who is a fireman will love this. But do u have a pattern for a paramedic? My daughter-in-law is a paramedic n I would love to make her one to put in her office. If so would u please let me know. Thanks
Merry
I do not have a paramedic specifically but I think you would be able to use the doctor/nurse gnome pattern to make one. Maybe add some patches to the arms or the paramedic emblem to the hat.
So excited to make this. I will make two, one for my son and one for my daughter-in-law (his wife). Both are fire fighters
Thanks Tammy
That is wonderful to hear.
Love this and it has worked up quickly. My uncle was a volunteer firefighter for as long as I can remember. He passed away in February suddenly. His memorial service is Saturday and I decided to make one to sit on the table by the programs and then I will give it to his wife afterwards. My kids said that I need to make one later for my collection as well 🙂
That is wonderful!!
