Crochet Bunny Bonnet for Spring and Easter

Babies are so fun to dress up and with a new baby in our home, I just had to make her a special little bonnet for Easter. I couldn’t decide if I wanted a bunny bonnet or a lamb bonnet so I made a pattern that could be used both ways. Then my oldest daughter decided she needed one as well. So there are sizes from newborn through a 5 yr old (20 inch head circumference).

Sizing Instructions

I know it is common to label baby sizes as newborn, 3 months, 6 months, and so on, but I have found that babies are born in a variety of sizes and that not every 3-month-old has the same head size. So below you will find the sizes listed by head circumference. Babies will often have their heads measured at their checkups appointments and it should be a fairly easy measurement to find.

For those having a hard time finding this measurement, here are some numbers that might be able to help you guess what size to make. My baby girl was born at 7 lbs 7 ozs and her head was 13 inches in circumference at birth. At 2 and a half months her head was 15 inches and now at 3 and a half months, her head is almost 16 inches in circumference. Hopefully, this will help you estimate what size to make.

Crochet Bunny Bonnet Pattern (And Lamb Bonnet)

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH1 (or CH2), turning chain, as a stitch.
– The bunny and lamb bonnets are exactly the same except for the number of rows worked for the ears.
– The Crochet Bunny Bonnet pattern is Copyrighted by Winding Road Crochet.
– Make sure to check your gauge to obtain proper sizing.
– The ties are worked in the last row of the pattern. They are created by first working a long chain and then working stitches into that chain to create a thicker tie.
– A Magic circle is used to begin the pattern. Alternative Row 1 can be used if you can not create a magic circle (or magic ring).

Part 1: Crown Rows

Note: The number of crown rows you work depends on the size bonnet you are making.

Crown Round 1: Make a Magic Circle, CH2, Work 12 DC into the Magic Circle. SLST to first DC. (12 DC)

Alternative Round 1: (This row is used in place of Row 1) CH3, Work 12 DC into the third CH from the hook, SLST to first DC. (12 DC)

Crown Round 2: CH2, *Work 2 DC into the next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 12 times. SLST to first DC. (24 DC)

Crown Round 3: CH2, *DC in next ST, Work 2 DC into the next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 12 times. SLST to first DC. (36 DC)

If you are making the Small baby bonnet size, stop here and move on to part 2, side rows.

Crown Round 4: CH2, *DC in next 2 STs, Work 2 DC into the next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 12 times. SLST to first DC. (48 DC)

If you are making the Medium baby bonnet size, stop here and move on to part 2, side rows.

Crown Round 5: CH2, *DC in next 3 STs, Work 2 DC into the next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 12 times. SLST to first DC. (60 DC)

If you are making the Large baby bonnet size, stop here and move on to part 2, side rows.

Crown Round 6: CH2, *DC in next 4 STs, Work 2 DC into the next ST* repeat from *to* a total of 12 times. SLST to first DC. (72 DC)

If you are making the Child bonnet size, stop here and move on to part 2, side rows.

Crown Rows

Part 2: Side Rows

Notes:
-We are continuing from where we left off from part one, but since your row count will vary based on the size you are making, we have started the row count over.
– For Part two we will turn at the end of our work and will not join the rows with a slip stitch.

Side Row 1: CH1, (SC, DC) into the first ST, *Skip a ST, (SC, DC) into the next ST* repeat from *to* until only one ST remains. SC in last ST. (Do not join to the beginning of this row.)

At this point your stitch count should be one more than the stitch count of your last crown row. (Ex. We stopped at Crown row 4 with 48 stitches to make a Medium size baby bonnet. For this size, Side row 1 will have 49 stitches.)

Side Row 2: CH1, turn, (SC, DC) into the first ST, *Skip a ST, (SC, DC) into the next ST* repeat from *to* until only two STs remain. Skip a ST, SC in last ST.

side rows
Crowns rows plus Side row 1 and 2 worked.

For Small Baby size bonnet, repeat Side row 2 until you have a total of 7 side rows and 10 rows total for your project.

For Medium Baby size bonnet, repeat Side row 2 until you have a total of 10 side rows and 14 rows total for your project.

For Large Baby size bonnet, repeat Side row 2 until you have a total of 13 side rows and 18 rows total for your project.

For Child size bonnet, repeat Side row 2 until you have a total of 16 side rows and 22 rows total for your project.

Part 3: Brim Rows

Note: We are continuing on from part 2, becuase row count will vary based on the size you are making, we are starting the row count over. All sizes will work the same number of brim rows.

Brim Row 1: CH2, turn, Work a DC into every stitch across.

Brim Row 2: CH2, turn, DC in first ST, FPDC into next ST, *BPDC into next ST, FPDC into next ST,* repeat from *to* until only one ST remains. DC in last ST.

Brim Row 3: CH2, turn, DC in first ST, BPDC into next ST, *FPDC into next ST, BPDC into next ST,* repeat from *to* until only one ST remains. DC in last ST.

Brim Row 4: CH2, turn, DC in first ST, FPDC into next ST, *BPDC into next ST, FPDC into next ST,* repeat from *to* until only one ST remains. DC in last ST.

Do not fasten off.

Part 4: Ties and Edging Row

Note: For the last row we will create the ties, we will first chain then work single crochets into the chain to create a tie. Next we will work long the side of the side rows to create a clean finish and then make one more tie by first chaining then working back into that chain.

Last Row: CH 31, SC in second CH from hook. SC in next 29 CHs. (A total of 30 SC), rotate your work so you can work into the side of the rows from Part 2 and 3. Work 2 SC into the side of each brim row. Work 1 SC into the side of each side row.

Last Row continued: Rotate your work until you can work into the other side of the side rows. Work 1 SC into the side of each side row, Work 2 SC into the side of each Brim row. CH 31. SC into second CH from the hook. SC into the next 29 CH.

Fasten off leaving a 6 inch yarn end.

Take the last tie that you crocheted and flip it over to that lies smoothly against the brim rows. Use a yarn needle and your yarn end to stitch the last stitch to the top of the brim rows and then weave in your end. Weave in the end at the center of the crown rows.

bonnet tie

We are almost done. We just need to crochet and attach two ears.

Part 5: Bunny or Lamb Ears

Row 1: CH 2, Work 2 SC into second CH from the hook. (2 SC)

Row 2: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC in next ST. (3 SC)

Row 3: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC in next 2 STs. (4 SC)

Row 4: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC in next 3 STs. (5 SC)

Row 5: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC in next 4 STs. (6 SC)

Row 6: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC in next 5 STs. (7 SC)

Row 7: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC in next 6 STs. (8 SC)

Rows 9-15: CH1, turn, SC in next 8 STs.

If you are making the lamb ears, skip rows 16-30 and just work the finishing row.

Rows 16-30: CH1, turn, SC in next 8 STs.

Finishing Row: CH1, rotate your work so that you can work down the side of the previous rows. Work 1 SC into the side of each row. Work 1 SC into the same CH that row 1 was worked into, CH1, Work another SC into the same CH row 1 was worked into.

Finishing Row Continued: Rotate your work so that you can work down the other side of the previous rows. Work 1 SC into the side of each row. Fasten off leaving a 10 inch yarn end for sewing.

tip of bunny bonnet ears

Make your second ear.

To place your ears, start by folding the bonnet so that it lays flat. We will place the ears into the very center of the side rows and so many inches below the fold on the bonnet. (See the photo below). How far down you sew the ears will depend on the size of bonnet you are making.

ear placement

Fold the ear in half and use a whip stitch to sew the top of the ear to the side of the bonnet.

For Small Baby size bonnet, sew the top of the ear 1.5 inches from the fold.

For Medium Baby size bonnet, sew the top of the ear 2 inches from the fold.

For Large Baby size bonnet, sew the top of the ear 2 inches from the fold.

For Child size bonnet, sew the top of the ear 2.5 inches from the fold.

Now your Crochet Bunny Bonnet is complete and ready to be enjoyed. They work up fast and make a great gift.
