Having a Fun Halloween in 2020
Well, 2020 has been quite a year. Halloween is just a few days away and I really needed to come up with a plan to make it a good one. I thought I would share our plans with you in hope that it may inspire you as well.
Are you going Trick or Treating?
That is the big question this year and our answer is simply, we do not know. It really boils down to one thing, uncertainty. As a trick or treater, I don’t know if anyone is planning to hand out candy this year. As a candy hander outer, I just don’t know if there will be any kids trick or treating this year.
So the end result is, Trick or Treating will probably be very lackluster. So I am planning on some other fun things to do with the kids.
Indoor Trick or Treating
Yes, we will make sure the kids get a decent amount of candy for Halloween but we want them to win or earn it. One great idea I heard was to have the adults go into bedrooms and have the kids Trick or Treat inside the house. This is great because my daughter is only 2 and it is really her first year to do Trick or Treating.
Halloween BINGO
Everyone likes BINGO! Bingo is a fun and easy game that will allow the kids to win candy. I created a handful of Halloween bingo cards included in the printable below.
Halloween Charades or Pictionary
Both Pictionary and Charades are pretty easy games. Make them Halloween themed by picking spooky, fun characters and things for everyone to act out. I have included 21 cards in the printable package with ideas for these two games.
Halloween Crochet Bowling Set
Another easy and fun game the kids can play is Halloween Bowling. I whipped up these little ghost bowling pins and a pumpkin bowling ball in a night or two. The free crochet pattern for this Halloween Crochet Bowling set is below. Just keep scrolling.
Movie Night
Nothing better than snuggling up with the kids for a fun movie. We are thinking about a few Scooby-Doo Movies and maybe Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.
Dance Party
Kids love to dance and it is a great way to have them burn off energy. To create a great Halloween playlist I jumped over to Amazon Music, it is included with the Amazon Prime membership (the normal version not the unlimited version) and I was able to find tons of Halloween-themed songs from Ghostbusters to Thriller. I created a song list in the printable below.
Halloween Watercolor Art
I really wanted an arts and crafts project for the kids to do this Halloween but I also wanted it to be very low prep. My son’s art teacher gave me a great idea. Did you know you can use washable markers for watercolor art. Here is how you do it.
1. Print off a coloring page or draw a picture with a pencil on cardstock.
2. Trace the lines with a washable marker. Trace it again to make the lines really dark.
3. Give the kids a little water and a paintbrush and let them paint away.
When the water touches the maker area is will cause it to ‘wash’ away and will look like watercolors. I often let my girl scribble with markers then paint the paper with a little water to make fun colorful art.
I have included some very simple coloring pages in the printable pack below. The lines are greyed out so the colors show up easier.

Yarn Choice and Substitution
Basically, I came up with this idea Sunday night, worked on it Sunday and a little Monday, then shared it here Tuesday. This is really meant to be a from-your-stash kind of pattern.
To make this pattern go quickly, I used 2 strands of size 4 yarn held together. I used a size H hook, 5mm, (because that was what was in my purse). If the stitches are super tight, feel free to move up to a Size I hook (5.5mm). You can also use a size 5 yarn instead of size 4 and then can get away with one strand of yarn.
Get Creative with Yarn Colors
Please get creative with this pattern and use what you have. If you do not have white yarn, then make them look like Pac Man ghosts and make them colorful. If you don’t have orange yarn, then use white and draw lines and eyes on it to make a Mummy or black and green to make a Frankenstein bowling ball.

Special Stitches
SC2TOG – Single Crochet 2 Stitches Together – Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull the loop through the hook (2 loops on hook), insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull the loop through the hook, (3 loops on the hook) yarn over and pull the first loop through all the loops on the hook.
