Fasten off and weave in your ends. Make two bird sides and then embroider one or both of the sides before joining the two sides together.
Embroidery (Optional)
The crochet ornament in the photos has a simple floral branch embroidered on one side. This video teaches you how to embroider on crochet. Here are the steps used to make this design.
1. Use the back stitch to embroider a slightly curved line about 2 inches long.
2. Add 3 to 4 small (1/4 inch) stitches coming out from the first line at an angle.
3. Using a French knot, make 2-3 knots around the end of each smaller stitch and the end of the curved line.
4. Use a French knot to add an eye to the bird.
You can also choose a different design to embroider onto the bird or leave the bird as it is.
Joining and Stuffing
To join the two sides together, line up the sides one on top of the other. Using a long strand of yarn (15 inches), single crochet around the project. When you single crochet, you will be working one single crochet into the sides of the rows and through both sides of the bird. (See photo below).
When you reach the tip of the bird’s peak, chain 2 then continue around the bird. When you reach each corner of the tail, Chain 1 then continue around the corner.
Stuff the ornament as it is joined together.
When you make it around the bird, fasten off and use the yarn end to sew the first and last joining stitch together.
Weave in your ends. Add a piece of yarn as a loop at the top of the bird to be able to hang your ornament. The Nordic crochet bird ornament is done and ready to be enjoyed.
