The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern

Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

Super Bulky Crochet Hat

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH1, turning chain, as a stitch.
– This pattern has 3 sections, the brim rows, the hat body, and the decrease rows. The row numbers start over in each section.

Hat Brim Rows

For sizes Baby and Toddler
CH 6

For Sizes Child, and Adult.
CH 9

Brim Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from the hook, SC in each CH across. (5sts or 8 sts)

Brim Row 2: CH1, turn, BLOSC in all STs except the last, SC in last ST.

Brim Row 3: CH1, turn, SC in first ST, BLOSC in each ST across.

Continue repeating brim rows 2 and 3 until you have the total number of rows for the size you are making. If you want to adjust the size of the hat, you can work any even number of rows in the brim section.

Baby Size: Work a total of 28 Brim Rows.
Toddler Size: Work a total of 32 Brim Rows.
Child Size: Work a total of 36 Brim Rows.
Adult Size: Work a total of 40 Brim Rows.

Once you complete your rows we will join two ends of the brim with the row below.

Joining Row: Fold the brim rows in half so that the last row is on top of row 1. Work a SLST through the first ST of Row 1 and the last Row. Work a SLST into each seat of STs across. (This will be 5 or 8 SLSTs total. Do not fasten off.

Turn your joined brim rows so that the slip stitch seam is on the inside of the joined circle. Now continue with the hat body rows

Crochet Hat Body Rows

  • For Row 1, we will be working into the side of the brim rows.
  • For the body rows, we will be working in one direction. Make sure that the outside of the hat is facing you when you crochet.

Body Row 1: CH1, SC into the side of first ST, CL into the side of next ST. *SC into the side of next ST, CL into the side of next ST* repeat from *to* around. SLST to first SC.

Body Row 3: CH1, SC into first ST, CL into next ST. *SC into next ST, CL into next ST* repeat from *to* around. SLST to first SC.

Continue repeating body rows 2 and 3 until you have the number of rows in the body section needed for the size you are making.

Baby Size: Work a total of 9 Body Rows.
Toddler Size: Work a total of 10 Body Rows.
Child Size: Work a total of 12 Body Rows.
Adult Size: Work a total of 13 Body Rows.

Decrease Rows

Gather the top of your hat with these three decrease rows.

Decrease Row 1: CH1, *SC2TOg* repeat from *to* around. SLST to first SC2TOG.

Decrease row 1

Decrease Row 2: CH1, *SC2TOg* repeat from *to* around. SLST to first SC2TOG.

Decrease Row 3: CH1, *SC2TOg* repeat from *to* around. SLST to first SC2TOG.

Note: The baby and child size will have an extra ST at the end of row 3. Just work a SC into this ST before slip stitching to the first SC.

Fasten off. Leaving an 8-inch yarn end.

Thread the yarn end onto a needle and sew the small opening shut. You can make a pom pom or use a store-bought pom-pom and sew it to the top of the hat. You can also choose to omit the pom-pom.

Now turn the brim up for a slightly slouchy crochet hat or keep it down for a very slouchy hat. The super bulky crochet hat is complete and ready to be used or gifted.
