Small Crochet Basket Stash Busters
This small hexagon crochet basket is a great way to keep organized and use up excess yarn. It takes just about 2 ounces of yarn or less and can be made in three different sizes. I use the little basket to hold hair accessories and jewelry.
Yarn Substitution
Though the pattern is written for size 4 (medium weight) and size 5 (bulky weight) yarn, you can really use any size yarn for this project. You will just need to use a hook size that creates a tight stiff fabric when you crochet.
The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern
Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern to take on the go with you, or tuck it into your project bag.

Hexagon Small Crochet Basket
Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH1, turning chain, as a stitch.
– Your hexagon will get wobbly and not lay flat. This is ok!
– You can work as many rows as you want for this hexagon. I provide extra rows in the pattern in case you want to make a larger crochet basket.

Tying your Small Basket Together
If you are doubling up your yarn then cut 12 strands of yarn about 7 inches for tying this into a basket. If you are using thicker yarn then you will only need 6 strands of yarn.
Starting on one corner, lay the hexagon with the inside side down. Count over 5 stitches on each side of one point. (Note: We are not counting the chains, just the stitches.)
Using two strands of yarn (or one strand for thicker yarn) and pull the ends through the fifth stitch on each side.
Now flip your project over. Pull the loop you made on the other side of the point to the top side.
Pull all yarn strands tight to fold the point. This will start creating the sides of the basket.
Knot the yarn strands together 3 times. You can trim the excess yarn and tuck it into the basket point or weave in your ends. (I trimmed mine.)
Repeat this process for all the points. Once all the points are tied, fold in your sides to help shape the basket. Press the sides down very firmly to create a crease where the hexagon should fold.
Unfold the sides and gently shape your basket. If the base of the basket still seems a little wavy, wet the bottom of the basket, place something heavy on it to make it stay flat, and let it dry. Blocking a project like this will help it hold its shape.
Now your small crochet basket is complete and ready to be enjoyed. They work up fast and make a great home decor item.
