Learn to make a cute crochet apron for yourself or a child with this free crochet pattern and video tutorial. These aprons are great for a mommy and me look.
Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this Mommy and Me Crochet apron pattern. You will also find all the material list, stitch list, gauge, video tutorial, and sizing information.
A Crochet Apron?
I was skeptical myself when I dreamt up this cute crochet apron. Would a crocheted apron be practical? What about the gaps between the stitches? Well after finishing the apron I found it to be very practical and to keep most messes off my clothes. If you are still concerned about the gaps then you can replace all double crochet with Linked Double Crochets or add a fabric liner to the apron. It is your choice
Yarn Substitution
I typically use cotton yarn for any kitchen crochet project, but I see no reason that an acrylic yarn can not be used. I would just make sure to use a medium-weight yarn (worsted weight) and check your gauge. You can adjust your hook size to help match the gauge.
The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern
Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

Gauge and Size
Gauge: 13 DC X 8 Rows = 4 inches
Size:
Size | Length Bottom of Skirt to Top of Bodice | Waist | Skirt Width |
Small Child | 16 inches | 20 -23 inches | 20 inches |
Large Child | 19 inches | 23 – 27 inches | 26 inches |
Adult | 24 inches | 25 -46 inches | 32 inches |
Note: The adult size is designed to fit someone from an x-small adult to 4XL. There is a waist tie adjustment for the smaller sizes if desired. The dress form in the photo in the instructions has a 25-inch waist that places it between size small and x-small. The normal adult apron waist tie can be wrapped from the back to the front to the back again and tied on the dress form. The model in the green dress is a size large and can wrap the waist tie from back to front and tie the waist tie on the front.
For sizes, x-large and above the waist tie will be tied in the back. If you use the waist tie modification for the x-small and small sizes then the waist tie should tie in the front.
Depending on the child’s waist size the apron may be tied in the front or back of the apron.

Mommy and Me Crochet Apron
Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH2, turning chain, as a stitch. This means you will not skip the first stitch of the row and you will not work into the top of the turning chain.
– Three sizes are provided and one modification is provided for the adult size to adjust the waist tie.
– All surface slip stitch rows are optional but do make the finished apron look nicer.
– You can easily adjust the waist tie and neck strap by increasing or reducing the chain count by any number.

Stop here for the small child apron. Do not fasten off. Continue with skirt ruffle Row 1.

Skirt Ruffle (Part 2)
Note: For the small and large child size, you will only work rows 1-3 of the skirt ruffle. For the adult size work rows 1-4. All sizes will work the surface slip stitch row and the edge row.
Skirt Ruffle Row 1: Change to white yarn, do not fasten off the main color yarn. CH2, turn, Work 2 DC into each ST of this row. (Small Child – 168DC, Large Child – 228DC, Adult – 276DC)
Skirt Ruffle Row 2-4: CH2, DC in each ST across.
Do not fasten off the white yarn.
After working the increases in skirt ruffle row one, you may notice that the stitches in the last skirt row are spread out and have larger gaps between the stitches. To correct this we will work a row of surface slip stitches into the top of the last row worked in the main color.
Surface Slip Stitch Row: Using the main color yarn that we have still attached to the last row of the main color. Insert your hook into the last stitch worked in the main color. Yarn over with the main color yarn on the back of your work and pull the loop through the stitch. Insert your hook into the next stitch of that row and yarn over on the backside of your work. Pull the loop through the stitch. Pull the first loop on the hook through the second loop on the hook to create a surface slip stitch. Continue to work surface slip stitches into the top of the last row of the last skirt row.
This row will tighten up the stitches that have been spread out by the increases in skirt ruffle row 1.
Now we will crochet into the side of the skirt rows using the white yarn. This will give us a place to work our waist tie stitches into.
Edging row: Using the white yarn still attached to your ruffle, rotate your work so that you are working into the side of the skirt rows. CH1, Work 2 SC into the side of each row. (Small Child – 68SC, Large Child – 88SC, Adult – 108SC)
Fasten off the white yarn.
The Waist Tie (Part 3)
Note: Now we will add the waist tie to the apron. We will do this by creating a new chain then working into the edging row of part 2, then ending the row with a long chain. The chains will expand the row to create a long tie for the apron. To help with any confusion, I have written this row 4 times, once for each size of the apron.
Small Child Waist Tie Row 1: With white yarn, CH 80, working into the edging row of part 2, work 1 SC into the next 68 STs, CH 82.
Large Child Waist Tie Row 1: With white yarn, CH 83, working into the edging row of part 2, work 1 SC into the next 88 STs, CH 85.
Below are two options for the Adult size. For medium to plus sizes use the Adult Waist Tie Row 1. If you are an adult size x-small or small then you have the option to use the Small Adult Waist Tie Row 1, in order to shorten the waist tie. This row is the only adjustment option in the adult pattern.
Small Adult Waist Tie Row 1: With white yarn, CH 85, working into the edging row of part 2, work 1 SC into the next 108 STs, CH 87.
Adult Waist Tie Row 1: With white yarn, CH 115, working into the edging row of part 2, work 1 SC into the next 108 STs, CH 117.
Waist Tie Row 2: (For all Sizes) DC into the 3rd CH from the hook. DC into each CH across, DC into each ST across. DC into each CH across. (Small Child – 228DC, Large Child – 254DC, Small Adult – 278DC, Adult – 338DC)
Fasten off. If you like you can leave the apron without a bodice and just add the pockets. That is up to you.
Crochet Apron Bodice (Part 4)
For the small child size, find the center 32 stitches of Waist tie Row 2 and mark them.
For the large child size, find the center 35 stitches of Waist tie Row 2 and mark them.
For the adult size, find the center 38 stitches of Waist tie Row 2 and mark them.
We will be working into these center stitches for bodice row 1.
Bodice Row 1: With main color yarn, work a standing DC into the first marked ST. DC into each of the marked center stitches. (Small Child – 32DC, Large Child – 35DC, Adult -38DC)
If you do not want to use a standing double crochet, you can slip stitch to the first marked stitch, CH2, then work your first double into the same stitch that you slip stitched to. Then complete bodice row 1 as written.
Bodice Rows 2-8: CH2, turn, DC in each ST across.
Stop here for the small child-size apron and continue to the bodice ruffle row.
Bodice Rows 9-12: CH2, turn, DC in each ST across.
Stop here for the large child-size apron and continue to the bodice ruffle row.
Bodice Row 13-15: CH2, turn, DC in each ST across.
Change to white yarn but do not fasten off the main color yarn.
Bodice Ruffle Row: CH2, turn, DC into the first ST, Work 2 DC into every stitch until you reach the last ST. DC in last ST. Fasten off white yarn. (Small Child – 62DC, Large Child – 68DC, Adult -74DC)
Bodice Surface Slip Stitch Row: Using the main color yarn that we have still attached to the last bodice row. Insert your hook into the last stitch worked in the main color. Yarn over with the main color yarn on the back of your work and pull the loop through the stitch. Insert your hook into the next stitch of that row and yarn over on the backside of your work. Pull the loop through the stitch. Pull the first loop on the stitch through the second loop on the stitch to create a surface slip stitch. Continue to work surface slip stitches into the top of the last bodice row.
This row will tighten up the stitches that have been spread out by the increases in the bodice ruffle row.
Fasten off the main color yarn.
Neck Strap (Part 5)
With white yarn:
Small Child Size: CH 50
Large Child Size: CH 61
Adult Size: CH 72
Neck Strap Row 1: DC in 3rd CH from hook. DC in each CH across. (Small Child – 48DC, Large Child – 59DC, Adult -70DC)
Fasten off leaving a yarn end for sewing to the top of the apron bodice.
Sew one side of the strap to the top of each side of the bodice behind the bodice ruffle row.
Crochet Apron Pockets (Part 6)
Note: For the child sizes, the pocket is made in one piece and then sewn down the middle to create 2 pockets. For the adult size, two pockets are made and sewn to the front of the apron.
With Main color yarn:
Small Child Size: CH 28
Large Child Size: CH 34
Adult Size: CH 18 (make 2 pockets)
Pocket Row 1: DC in 3rd CH from hook. DC in each CH across. (Small Child – 26DC, Large Child – 32DC, Adult -16DC)
Pocket Rows 2-5: CH2, turn, DC in each ST across.
Stop here for the small child-size apron and continue to the last pocket row.
Pocket Rows 6 – 8: CH2, turn, DC in each ST across.
Last Pocket Row: Change to white yarn. CH2, turn, DC in each ST across.
Fasten off the leaving a long yarn end of the main color yarn to sew your pocket to the front of the apron. For the child-size aprons, sew a seam down the middle of the pocket to create two pockets.
Now your Mommy and Me crochet apron is complete and ready to be enjoyed.
