There is nothing better than wrapping our loved ones up in a blanket that you made especially for them. The modern stripes crochet blanket is a blanket I designed for my son. With the colorful stripes and textured border, it seemed perfect for this growing boy.

Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this modern stripes blanket. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge and sizing information. Designing the Modern Stripes Crochet Blanket

I wanted to design a blanket that had all my favorite crochet elements. A heavily textured border, bright beautiful colors and stunning stitches. This blanket brings these elements together in a single project.

Deciding on colors for this blanket was a roller coaster ride. Every time I asked my son his favorite color, he had a different answer. So I decided to use all the colors and to make the design a bit different, I did 3 groups of striping instead of a constant stripe pattern. This gave the blanket a modern look. I just love the masculine colors in this blanket, but it would also look perfect with yellow, pinks and purple stripes.

This blanket was designed as a ‘large’ baby blanket. Well despite trying to control the gauge on this blanket, the moss stitch tends to stretch a lot and left us with a blanket that is the size of a small throw. To be truthful, I think a small throw is a perfect size for a 6-year-old boy. and a great size to adorn a couch.

Choosing Yarn for our Crochet Blanket

When it comes to durability and color selection, few yarns can be Red Heart Super Saver. They have so many colors to choose from. This yarn is designed to be washed several times and still looks amazing. If you want something a little softer, you can opt for Red Heart With Love, or wash the blanket with a bit of fabric softener when it is done to soften it up.

The Stitches Used for the Stripes Crochet Blanket

Oh, this blanket uses all my favorite stitches! Truly it does. The base of the blanket is a beautiful Moss Stitch, with colorful stripes of cluster stitches. These two stitches were truly made for each other.

To finish the blanket I wanted a textured border, but I wanted something unique. So I worked a few different swatches and came up with the Mini Basket Weave Border. This border has a beautiful texture. If you find that the border ripples a bit, then use a size smaller hook to prevent this.

Final Size
52 inches by 60 inches

Special Stitches

Cluster Stitch – CL – *YO, insert hook into next ST and pull up a loop, YO, pull the first loop through the second and third loop on the hook* repeat form *to* a total of 3 times. YO, pull the first loop through all 3 loops on the hook. (Video Tutorial)

Note: The cluster stitch is actually a ‘double 3 stitches together’, but all worked into the next stitch instead of over 3 stitches.

Single Crochet Blanket Border

I like to start every blanket border with a simple single crochet border. This helps me figure out the stitch count of the border and what borders will work for the blanket. Below is the video tutorial for this single crochet border as well as the written pattern.

SC Border Row: CH1, working down the side of the row, Work 1 SC into the side of every Moss stitch row and 2 SC into the side of the Cluster Stitch rows. When you reach the corner CH2, turn and work 1 SC into the other side of each starting Chain. Ch2 at the next corner and work up the other side and SC into the side of each Moss Stitch row and 2 SC into the side of the Cluster Stitch row. When you reach the 3rd corner, CH2, and work a SC into the top of each ST of row 185. CH2 and SLST to the first SC of the Single Crochet Border row.

Mini Basket Weave Border

Now we are ready to finish our blanket with a beautiful heavy textured border. Again I have a video tutorial as well as the written pattern below.

Border Row 1: Ch2, Work a DC into the Ch2 corner you just made, DC in each ST until the next Corner, *(DC, CH2, DC) into the corner space. DC into each St until the next corner,* repeat from *to* a total of 3 times. DC into corner space, Ch2, SLST to 1st DC.

Border Row 2-5: CH2, Work a DC into the corner space you just made, FPDC in next ST, BPDC in next ST* repeat until one ST is left on this side. FPDC into last ST. *(DC, CH2, DC) into CH2 Corner Space, FPDC in next ST, BPDC in next ST* repeat until one ST is left on this side. FPDC into last ST.* repeat from *to* a total of 3 times. DC into Corner Space, CH2. SLST to first DC.

NOTES: When you work Row 2 a second time, after your first stitch every stitch will be worked into the opposite stitch of the last row. So if you worked a FPDC last row, then you will work a BPDC into that stitch this row. This creates the mini basketweave texture.

Fasten off after working border row 5 and weave in all your ends. Your blanket is completed.
