Not Knit, Crochet Twisted Ear Warmer

Lately I have just fallen in love with mimicing knitted items using crochet. For this faux knit ear warmer, I used a stitch called the yarn over slip stitch. It does have a few other names but they are all pretty long.

This crochet twisted ear warmer is a very simple, one row repeat pattern. You just need to get comfortable with the new stitch. Once you get the hang of this stitch you are good to go.

Special Stitches

Yarn Over Slip Stitch – (YOSLST) Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, Yarn over and pull your loop through the stitch. (You will have 3 loops on your hook) Pull the first loop on your hook through the other 2 loops on your hook.

This will feel like a half double crochet except that you will not yarn over again after pulling a loop through the stitch. This stitch can also be called the Half Double Slip Stitch and Fisherman’s Stitch.

Here is where the magic happens. We are going to join the two ends of our ear warmers together in a way that will create this twisted look.

Below I have 2 sets of photo instructions for how to fold and join your pieces together. One set is the plain photos and the other set uses a pink and blue line to indicate the two ends of the ear warmer.

  1. Thanks for the blue and pink lined sewing instructions for the Twisted Ear Warmer!! And for giving instructions for the 3 yarn weights. No one else does this!😁

    • It is not always possible to give instructions in 3 yarn weights, but I will try to do it when I can. I just did a hat pattern called the Hygge Hat in two yarn weights.

  2. Hi Lindsey! I have a dilemma with the Twisted Ear Warmer pattern. I used Size 4 yarn, and followed the instructions exactly as above for the small adult size, checked my gauges numerous times, even measured my head, and the ear warmer is still approx 4″ too big! It falls off my head. I’ve already sewn it together. Any ideas on how I can fix this without tearing it apart?

    • One option is to take out the sewn portion and to fold it back by 2 inches on each side. Then sew the twisted section again using the folded sections. It will be a bit bulkier but will save having to tear it out.

If you do decided to make a second ear warmer, then I would work 2-3 rows and then measure the length to make sure it is 1-2 inches less than your head circumference.

I did check the gauge 7 sts = 1.75 inches by 80 chain means the headband should be right about 20 inches long.

  3. Hi! Im hoping for any tips for the twist join. I attempted it once and it feels really dense. Is there a way to weave it so it lays more smoothly?

    Reply
    • Not that I am aware of. The four layers are turned with their ends facing your forehead. You can tug on it a bit or block it to make it lay a little flatter. THis is the common method to make the twisted look.

  4. I used chunky weight yarn and a size 6mm hook with 68 stitches -when finished it was a big adult size so after it was all sewed together I did a row of slip stitch on what I hope will be the top.

  5. Hello! For the baby and toddler size with weight 4, is it still 15 rows? Or is it less rows if you’re making a baby or toddler size?

  6. I love your pattern! I’m making the toddler size with weight 4 yarn and size 5mm hook. Is it still 15 rows for the toddler size and the baby size or is it fewer rows? Thanks!
