Not Knit, Crochet Twisted Ear Warmer

Lately I have just fallen in love with mimicing knitted items using crochet. For this faux knit ear warmer, I used a stitch called the yarn over slip stitch. It does have a few other names but they are all pretty long.

This crochet twisted ear warmer is a very simple, one row repeat pattern. You just need to get comfortable with the new stitch. Once you get the hang of this stitch you are good to go.

Lately I have really been trying to crochet just from my yarn stash. It is nice to clear it out every once in a while. To make that easier for you, I have provided instructions for making this pattern with three different sizes of yarn.

You will be able to make this crochet twisted ear warmer with worsted weight (size 4), bulky (size 5) and super bulky (size 6 yarn). I have to confess that my favorite of the three is the size 5 bulky yarn.

The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern

Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a print out of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted ad-free large font PDF version of the pattern. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag or basket.

Special Stitches

Yarn Over Slip Stitch – (YOSLST) Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, Yarn over and pull your loop through the stitch. (You will have 3 loops on your hook) Pull the first loop on your hook through the other 2 loops on your hook.

This will feel like a half double crochet except that you will not yarn over again after pulling a loop through the stitch. This stitch can also be called the Half Double Slip Stitch and Fisherman’s Stitch.

Here is where the magic happens. We are going to join the two ends of our ear warmers together in a way that will create this twisted look.

Below I have 2 sets of photo instructions for how to fold and join your pieces together. One set is the plain photos and the other set uses a pink and blue line to indicate the two ends of the ear warmer.

Step 3: Fold your right side end over the left side so that it resembles step 3 in the picture above.

Step 4: Use your long yarn end and a needle sew a row of stitches that goes through all 4 layers. I like to sew back and forth a few time to secure these layers together.

Step 5: Weave in your ends and turn your ear warmer inside out and your ear warmer will be done!

This crochet twisted ear warmer works up so fast. It make the perfect last minute crochet gift for a birthday or stocking stuffer.
