Crochet Produce Bag – A Step Towards less Waste

Plastic takes a really long time to breakdown and it can be harmful to animals. So instead of using plastic produce bags, consider using reusable produce bags. These crochet produce bags can be made using any of the basic crochet stitches and be made to any size. Below you will find 3 patterns all using a different crochet stitch and notes on how to adjust the size.

Green bottom bag uses single crochet, teal bottom bag uses double crochet and pink bottom bag uses half double crochet.

Be Green and Have some Crochet Fun

As crocheters there are a lot of ways for us to be ‘green’. One of those ways is to simple make things instead of buying them. Making usable items instead of using disposable items are a great way to be friendly to the planet. I also believe that the items we crochet are a higher quality than what we buy and will last longer. This also creates less waste in the long run.

The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern

Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

Quick Crochet Produce Bag

Notes for all Patterns:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH1 (or CH2), turning chain, as a stitch.
– We will be working in joined rounds and turning at the end of each round.
– All three patterns are very similar. The difference is the main stitch used and the number of rows worked.
– Instruction photos are included in the first pattern but are relevant to all patterns.
– You can make these bags as tall as you like just by working more rows of mesh.
– You can make these bags wider or narrower. Just work any odd number of chains for the small and medium mesh bag and any even number of chains for the large mesh bag.

  1. I love this idea, wonder if you can “tare” the scale at the grocery store when using these so it doesn’t include the weight of the bag. I have never noticed a “tare” button before (though, to be honest, I have never looked for one). Thank you for sharing 😊

    • You need to ask your local store. I know my Sprouts supposedly will do it but I have never asked them to. I would just ask a cashier before you fill the bag. They ‘should’ be able to because there are a lot of people who bring in glass jars to fill up from the bulk bins and they don’t want to pay for the weight of the glass jar.

    • All the bags are the same size. The Large Mesh bag uses Double crochet for the entire project. The Medium Mesh bag uses half double crochet for the entire project except one row. The Small mesh bag uses single crochet for the entire project except for one row.

  2. I made the Medium mesh bag with no problems (HDC); however, when I switched to making the Large mesh bag, halfway through, the instructions change and state to use a SC, and it says to insert and weave in the chain tie in row 25 when the pattern stops at 24. I think some of the pattern directions may have gotten mixed, but based on the pictures and your statement that you can make this as big/small as you choose, I will follow this pattern for the Large mesh bag with a DC until the desired height. This may be a little confusing for some, but your notes and pictures help. Thank you.

    • Hi, thank you for letting me know. Since the patterns are so similar I copy and paste parts of it and my not have adjusted the stitches. I will check the pattern and make corrections.
