Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH2, turning chain, as a stitch. (I actually use a CH1 method that is shown in the video tutorial.)
– Your stitch count will be 2 less than your starting chain and will be the same for every row.

Tips for Customizing the Size

You can easily customize the size of your mat by changing the starting chain and the number of rows you work. You will want to chain an even number of chains about the width of the mat you are trying to make. Then add 2 more chains for your turning chain. Work row 1 then measure your width and make sure it is still your desired size. Work rows 2 and 3 then check the size again. I found that the stitches tended to relax and become a little bit wider than when I measured the starting chain.

When deciding how wide to make your mat, remember that the fringe will also add more width to the mat as well. Adjust accordingly.

Every Room Crochet Mat

Mug Rug/ Countertop Mat: CH 26
Window Sill Mat: CH 142
Placemat: CH 66
Plant Mat: CH 46

Row 1: DC in the 3rd CH, from the hook. DC in each ST across.

Row 2: CH2, turn, DC in the first ST. *Skip a ST, DC in next ST, DC in Skipped ST,* repeat from *to* until the last ST of the row. DC in last ST.

Note: When working row two make sure you are skipping the next unworked stitch. Do not work 2 stitches into the same stitch.

Row 3: CH2, turn, DC in each ST across.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have the number of rows recommended below for your size mat.

Mug Rug or Counter Top Mat: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 9 rows.

Kitchen Window Sill Mat: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 7 rows.

Croche Placemat: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 21 rows.

Plant Mat: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 23 rows.

After your last row, fasten off and weave in your ends.

Adding Fringe (Optional)

When adding fringe, I added 1 set of fringe to the side of every row. You can use 2-3 pieces of yarn for each fringe.

  1. Cut the fringe pieces to 6 inches long. I like to use a 3-inch piece of cardboard to do this. I wrap the yarn around the cardboard then cut the yarn on one side.
  2. Take 2-3 pieces and fold them in half, use your crochet hook to pull the fold through the side of one stitch.

3. Now use your hook to pull the yarn ends all the way through the loop on your hook.
4. Pull the yarn ends tight to secure your fringe

Repeat steps 1-4 to add fringe to the side of every stitch.

Now your Every Room Crochet Mat is complete and ready to add a handmade touch to your home decor.
