This Vintage Crochet Hair Tie is a quick and easy crochet pattern. Make up several to match all the outfits in your wardrobe. This is a free crochet pattern with a video tutorial.
Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this Vintage Crochet Hair Tie pattern. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge, video tutorial, and sizing information.
Make Crochet Hair Ties for Big and Small
Why stop with just one size of crochet hair ties? This style looks great on adults and kids alike, so I created two different patterns and you can make the size you want.
I just tied my crochet hair ties one to a hairband, but you can also make a crochet scrunchie first and add the hair tie to that. If you want the hair tie in a headband form, check out the Casual Cotton Headband.
Pick your Yarn! It is just a Hair Tie
You will notice that I use cotton yarn for this project. I stuck to Yarnspirations Peaches N Creme Stripey Yarn and Sugar N Creme Solids. You can use any worsted weight yarn (weight #4) to make this pattern. Use up your acrylic, cotton, or wool scraps. The striped yarn in the photos is actually thin for a worsted weight yarn and makes me think that using size 3 yarn will probably turn out as well! The hair tie might turn out a bit smaller if you use weight #3 yarn.
The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern
Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

Do not fasten off. We will continue the pattern by adding a single crochet border. (Instructions below.)
Adding a Single Crochet Border
Now we will single crochet into the sides of our rows to create a nice edge. Because we used half double crochet we will work 2 single crochets into the side of the first row and 1 single crochet into the side of the second row and then repeat that pattern to have even stitches around the edge.
Border Row: CH1, turn so you are working into the sides of the rows. *Work 2 SC into the side of the a row, Work 1 SC into the side of the next row* repeat from *to* until you reach the other point of the hair tie. CH2, and turn to work down the other side of the rows. *Work 2 SC into the side of the a row, Work 1 SC into the side of the next row* repeat from *to* until you reach the first point of the hair tie. CH2 and SLST to the first SC.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Adding the Hair Tie to a Hairband
To finish up your vintage crochet hair tie we will just need to tie it onto a hairband. To do this you will take your hair tie and make a simple overhand knot to attach it to the hair tie. I have added a photo tutorial below to help.
Step 1: Insert your tie through the center of the hairband and position like the photo.
Step 2: Take your right tie end and cross it behind the left tie end.
Step 3: Tuck your back piece into the loop created in step 2.
Step 4: Pull both ends tight to finish the knot. Spend a minute working on getting the ends even and positioned to your liking.
Now your Vintage Crochet Hair Tie is complete and ready to be enjoyed. They work up fast and make a great gift.
