Beginner Crochet Coaster Pattern

This crochet coaster pattern is perfect for beginner crocheters. We will simply be crocheting a square and lining it with some felt to create a simple but useful coaster. Make a set of coasters and give them as gifts or use them for stocking stuffers for friends or parents.

Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this crochet coaster pattern. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge, and sizing information. To make this pattern easier for beginners, I have written the pattern with and without abbreviations.

The Beginner-Friendly Crochet Coaster

While working on my “How to Crochet” series, I wanted to provide several beginner friendly patterns to help new crocheters practice. Plus, I wanted to show beginners how many items they could make with just crocheted squares and rectangles.

What I didn’t not expect as how much I, as an advanced crocheter, enjoyed working these simple patterns. They were relaxing and had a beautiful minimalist look. They are also a wonderful way to showcase beautiful yarns.

Video Tutorial

Here is a video tutorial for 3 beginner-friendly patterns. The coaster is the second pattern in the video.

This free crochet pattern is perfect for beginners. This beginner crochet coaster pattern is easy to follow and even has an unabbreviated pattern version.

Beginner Crochet Coaster Pattern

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
-This is the abbreviated version of the pattern.
– After row 1 measure your piece to make sure it is approximately 3.5 inches wide.

CH 15

Row 1: SC into the 2nd CH from hook, SC in next 13 CH. (14SC)

Row 2- 15: CH1, turn, SC in each ST across. (14 SC)

After Row 15, fasten off and weave in your ends.

Cut out a piece of felt that is just slightly smaller than your coaster. Use a contrasting color of yarn and stitch the felt to the bottom of your coaster. You can do this using a running stitch or whip stitch. This video will show you how to sew these stitches.

Non-Abbreviated Crochet Coaster Pattern

Since this is a beginner pattern, I thought I would write an non-abbreviated pattern for anyone who is still learning to read patterns.

To Start:
Make a slipknot and place the yarn on your hook. Chain 15 chains. Turn your work.

Row 1: Work a Single Crochet into the second Chain from the hook. Now, work a single crochet into each of the next 13 chains. You will end the row with 14 single crochet.

Row 2: To start your next row, chain once and flip over your project so you can work into the stitches of the last row worked. Work 1 single crochet into each stitch of the last row. You will end the row with 14 single crochet.

Continue repeating row 2 until you have a total of 15 rows. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Cut out a piece of felt that is just slightly smaller than your coaster. Use a contrasting color of yarn and stitch the felt to the bottom of your coaster. You can do this using a running stitch or whip stitch. This video will show you how to sew these stitches.
