Oh, I am so happy we have made it to part 2 of our Crochet Painting Crochet A Long. In this part, we will be making the vases or the plant pots of our paintings. I will provide you the patterns below for the exact appliques that I have on my painting, but I have also created a video tutorial to teach you the technique that will allow you to make your own single crochet applique.
What is a Single Crochet Applique?
There are several ways to make an applique but one very easy method is to just us single crochet. A single crochet applique is worked in rows and includes increases and decreases in the first and last stitch only to manipulate its shape.
There are advanced techniques that you can use to create even more dynamic shapes with just single crochet, but for today we are going to stick with simple vase and plant pot shapes that gradually change shape.
If you are interested in learning more about making complex crochet appliques, let me know in the comments below and we can look into making a second tutorial. This technique is used to make rag dolls, cuddlers and other stuffed projects that are created by working to identically shaped pieces then sewing or crocheting them together.

The Single Crochet Applique Technique
Below is a video walking you through how to create your own unique vase or cactus pots. I recommend getting creative and making your own design, but if that is not your thing, scroll down for the written patterns of the vases and plant pots seen in the example paintings.
Below you will also find the patterns for the templates used in the video tutorial.
Single Crochet Applique Templates
All templates used worsted weight yarn and a size H 5 mm crochet hook. To see how the templates are used, check out the video tutorial above.

CH5
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook, SC in next 3 CH. (4 SC)
Row 2-8: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first ST, SC in each ST across.
Row 9-11: CH1, SC in each ST across. (11 SC)
Row 12-15: CH1, turn, SC2TOG, SC in each ST across.
Row 16: CH1, turn, SC in next 7 STS. (7 SC)
Row 17-20: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first ST, SC in each ST across.
Your last row will have 11 stitches. Now we will crochet around the applique to create a smooth edge.
Chain 1, turn your work so that you are working into the sides of the rows. Work a Single Crochet into the side of each row until you reach the bottom of the vase. Chain, work a single crochet into the opposite side of the starting chain, chain 1, Single crochet into the sides of the rows on the other side of the applique. Chain 1 and slip stitch to the first stitch worked in row 20.
Fasten off leaving a very long tail. You can use this tail to sew the vase to your painting, but I would wait until we complete all the other parts of the painting to do so.

Row 1: SC into 2nd Ch from hook and next CH. (2 SC)
Row 2: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first ST, SC in next ST. (3 SC)

Row 8: CH1, turn, Sc in next 4 STS, work 2 SC in last ST. (6 SC)
Row 9: CH1, turn, SC into next 6 STS. (6 SC)
Chain 1, work 1 single crochet into the side of each row. When you reach the bottom of the pot, chain 1 and work 1 single crochet into the other side of the starting chain, chain 1 and work single crochet up the other side of the pot. Slip stitch to the first stitch worked in row 9.
Fasten off leaving a very long tail. You can use this tail to sew the vase to your painting, but I would wait until we complete all the other parts of the painting to do so.
CH6
Row 1: SC in 2nd Ch from hook and next 4 CH. (5 SC)
Row 2-4: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first ST. SC in each ST across.
Note: At the end of row 4 you will have 8 single crochet.
For this plant pot, I did not single crochet around the edge. You can fasten off leaving a long tail or follow the directions for the next pot to single crochet around the edges.
CH 6
Row 1: Work 2 Sc into the 2nd CH from the hook, Sc in next 4 Ch. (6 SC)
Row 2: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into first stitch, Sc in next 5 STS. (7 SC)
Row 3-6: CH1, turn, SC into next 7 STS. (7 SC).
Chain 1, work 1 single crochet into the side of each row. When you reach the bottom just continue working 1 single crochet into the other side of the starting chain then up the other side of the pot. This will give it a nice curved look. Slip stitch to the first stitch worked in row 6.
Fasten off leaving a very long tail. You can use this tail to sew the vase to your painting, but I would wait until we complete all the other parts of the painting to do so.
And now your plant pots or vase is complete. Just hold on to your pieces and we will continue this project on January 28th.

On the flower vase applique what is the completed size in inches please?
Right about 5 inches.
I would like a second tutorial to make the cuddles dolls
I think that would be very fun and will see about making a tutorial on the more advance shaping methods with single crochet.
