Double Pom Pom Crochet Hat Pattern

If one is good, then the two pom poms on this crochet hat pattern is even better, right? If not then feel free to add a single pom-pom in the middle. I love to see people get creative with my designs. Either way, you are sure to love this knit look crochet hat pattern.

Use the knit stitch or waistcoat stitch to make this double pom pom crochet hat pattern. Video tutorial included to show you how to crochet this stitch.

My daughter wore her hat out and about today, and she has been turning so many heads and getting so many compliments. There is just something about those big pom poms that almost make them look like the iconic mouse ears.

For this quick hat, I used the beautiful Lion Brand Color Made Easy. The size five yarn makes this hat work up in no time at all. I used a Clover 4.5 inch Pom Pom Maker to make the pom poms, but be warned I used almost an entire skein of yarn for these massive pom-poms. Feel free to make them smaller, but after seeing how cute they are I still just love the oversized pom poms.

The knit stitch in this hat is the perfect way to add a cute design. Check out the video tutorial below to learn how to crochet, change colors, increase and decrease with this stitch. It is bound to become a favorite stitch of yours. Now let’s grab our hooks and get started.

Double Pom Pom Crochet Hat Pattern

Note:
-Pattern written in US terms.
-The color pattern is worked in a multiple of 6 or sometimes 3.
-You can easily adjust the size of this pattern by increasing or decreasing the number of rows in the hatband by six rows. (Ex. Work 54 rows in the band to create a hat that has a circumference of 22″ or 42 rows for a hat with a circumference of 18″. Notes will be provided further down to help adjust the height of the hat and how to decrease the top of the hat.
-Feel free to add more Chains to the starting chain to make a thicker brim. It will not affect the rest of the pattern.

Hat Band

With Pink Ch7

Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from the hook, SC in next 5 CH. (6 SC)

Row 2-48: CH1. turn, SC in next 6 STS.

Fold the band in half, while holding the first and last row on top of each other, Slip stitch the rows together with 6 Slip Stitches.

Note: Feel free to add or subtract 6 rows to adjust the size of the band.

Hat Body

From where we left off on the hatband.

Row 1: CH1, working down the sides of the rows on the hatband, work 1 SC into the side of each row in the hatband. Slst to first SC. (48 SC)

Note: Row 2 is where you will start working with two colors. You will want to carry one color underneath the other as you work.

Row 2: CH1, *WC in next 2 STS, CC to White, WC in next ST, CC to Pink, WC in next 3 STS* repeat from *to* until you reach the end of the row. SLST to first WC.

Row 3: CH1, *WC in next ST, CC to White, WC in next 3 STS, CC to Pink, WC in next 2 STS. * repeat from *to* until you reach the end of the row. SLST to first WC.

Row 4: CH1, *WC in next 2 STS, CC to White, WC in next ST, * repeat from *to* until you reach the end of the row. SLST to first WC.

Row 4 ends with white and Row 5 begins with White.

Row 5: CH1, *WC in next ST, CC to Pink, WC in next 3 STS, CC to White, WC in next 2 STS, * repeat from *to* until you reach the end of the row. SLST to first WC.

Row 8: With White, CH1, *WC in next ST, CC to Pink, WC in next ST, CC to White, WC in next ST, CC to Pink, WC in next ST, CC to White, WC in next 2 STS, * repeat from *to* until you reach the end of the row. SLST to first WC.

Row 9: With White, CH1, *WC in next 2 STS, CC to Pink, WC in next ST * repeat from *to* until you reach the end of the row. SLST to first WC.

Note: At the end of Row 9 change your color back to white. From now on we will only be working with white.

Row 10-11: CH1, WC in every ST around. SLST to first WC.

Notes for the smaller hat: If you are making a baby size hat you may want to skip rows 10-11 to make a shorter hat and if you are using a hatband with 42 rows you will want to skip Row 12 so that your decreases work correctly.

Notes for Larger Hat: For an adult size hat you will want to repeat Row 11 for 5 more times. This will give you a hat the is 9 inches tall. If your hatband has 54 rows in it, then you will need to work this additional row after you have added extra height.

Additional Row for hats with 54 Sts: Ch1, *WC in next 7 STs, WC2TOG* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first WC.

Row 12: Ch1, *WC in next 6 STs, WC2TOG* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first WC.

Row 13: Ch1, *WC in next 5 STs, WC2TOG* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first WC.

Row 14: Ch1, *WC in next 4 STs, WC2TOG* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first WC.

Row 15: Ch1, *WC in next 3 STs, WC2TOG* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first WC.

Row 16: Ch1, *WC in next 2 STs, WC2TOG* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first WC.

Row 17: Ch1, *WC in next ST, WC2TOG* repeat from *to* a total of 6 times. SLST to first WC. Fasten off leaving a long tail

Use the yarn tail to sew a gathering stitch through the last row of stitches and gather the top together. Weave in your ends.

Now you just have to make two large pom poms and sew them to the sides of the hat around Rows 11 and 12 of the hat body. I used the Clover 4.5 inch Pom Pom Maker maker and it took almost one whole skein to make two large pom poms. You are welcome to make smaller pom poms or just use one pom in the center.

Now it is time to use your hat to keep you or a loved one warm. Enjoy!
