Emma Crochet Dress Free Pattern

The Emma Crochet Dress has a beautiful texture but very simple construction making it an great project for an advanced beginner. All you need to learn is the herringbone stitch in order to achieve this beautiful look.

When I was you my cousins Amanda, my sister Megan and I had a number of matching dresses. My grandmother would sew us beautiful dresses with full skirts and matching bonnets. I am sad to say that we have very few pictures of these dresses and no pictures of all three of us together.

I have to say I am thrilled that the times have changed and it is easier to capture these precious moments on our phones. This year I wanted to take up the torch and make matching crochet dresses for my daughter and two nieces.

About this Crochet Dress

This crochet dress was a fun challenge because it meant making the same dress in three very different sizes. I needed a dress for a baby, toddler and young girl. I knew I wanted a dress with a simple design and a beautiful texture. I added some pockets and color striping to really make these dresses stand out.

This also means that I will be creating sizes 6 months to a girl’s extra-large. In order to keep the blog posts from becoming too long. I will be creating five different posts each with two pattern sizes. I will provide all the links in the sizing section below.

I have to confess that the herringbone stitch is one of my go-to crochet stitches when I am looking for a unique texture. If you have never used this stitch I have a great photo tutorial here.

When picking out a yarn for this project I really wanted vibrant colors, a soft feel and great stitch definition. Chic Sheep by Red Heart Yarns completely fit the bill with its soft merino wool and rich color selection. The yarn for this project was supplied by Red Heart yarns.

Gauge

6 stitches = 2″

5 rows = 2″

Let’s talk about gauge really quick. In order for this pattern to turn out the correct size it is important to check your gauge. I have often found that I crochet with a tighter tension that’s most, I am constantly working on this, but what this means is you may need to use a larger or smaller hook in order to reach the same gauge.

If you want more guidance with gauge, check out my Simple Fall Baby Dress CAL (Crochet a Long) Video Tutorial Part 1.

Emma Crochet Dress

Crochet Dress Pattern: Baby 6 Months – 12 Months

Pattern Notes:

  • In my experience a good number of people get confused when using size adjustments in parentheses. This is partially why I have separated the patterns so that one pattern only cover two sizes. I have minimized the use of parentheses in this pattern.
  • When reading this pattern and making the smaller size dress use the first number given.
  • When making the larger size dress, use the first number given unless a number is given in parenthesis, then you will use the number in the parenthesis.
  • The two sizes are worked exactly the same in rows 1-7. Notes will be provided in bold when extra rows are needed for the larger size.
  • I do not count my turning chain as a stitch and I do not work my last stitch into the turning chain.
  • Color Notes – For Size 6 Months: Rows 1-2 is Sterling, rows 3-27  is Main Color, rows 28-29  is Lace, and rows 30-35  is Sterling. (Color information is coming)
  • For Size 12 Months: Rows 1-2 is Sterling, rows 3-30 is Main Color, rows 31-33 is Lace, and rows 34-45  is Sterling.

Crochet Dress Pattern: Girl’s Small and Medium

Pattern Notes:

  • In my experience a good number of people get confused when using size adjustments in parentheses. This is partially why I have separated all the patterns into multiple posts. I have minimized the use of parentheses in this pattern
  • When reading this pattern and making the smaller size dress use the first number given.
  • When making the larger size dress, use the first number given unless a number is given in parenthesis, then you will use the number in the parenthesis.
  • The two sizes are worked exactly the same in rows 1-10. Notes will be provided in bold when extra rows are needed for the larger size.
  • I do not count my turning chain as a stitch and I do not work my last stitch into the turning chain.
