Crochet Gnome Garland!
It is true I might seem a little gnome-obsessed. With 50+ gnome patterns here, and already a gnome ornament pattern, why would I make another? Mostly it is because I love a handmade holiday and I love patterns that use up yarn scraps! So make a bunch of these gnomes as ornaments for your holiday tree or turn the gnomes into a cute garland.
Not just for Christmas!
It used to be that you would only find gnomes around Christmas time, but lately, you can find gnomes for any holiday season. Make these gnomes in pastel colors for Easter and Spring or bright colors for summer. Get creative!
The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern
Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large-font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH1, turning chain, as a stitch.
– The Crochet Gnome Garland pattern is copyrighted by Winding Road Crochet.
– This crochet pattern uses a wooden bead for the gnome’s nose, below this pattern I have included an additional pattern for a crochet gnome nose that can be used in place of the wooden bead.
Gnome Hat (Make 2)
CH 2
Row 1: Work 2 SC into the 2nd CH from the hook. (2)
Row 2: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC into the next ST. (3)
Row 3: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC into the next 2 STs. (4)
Row 4: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC into the next 3 STs. (5)
Row 5: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC into the next 4 STs. (6)
Row 6: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC into the next 5 STs. (7)
Row 7: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC into the next 6 STs. (8)
Row 8: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC into the next 7 STs. (9)
Row 9: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC into the next 8 STs. (10)
Row 10: CH1, turn, Work 2 SC into the first ST. SC into the next 9 STs. (11)
Row 11: CH1, turn, HDC into the first 4 STs, SC into the next ST, SLST into the next ST, SC into the next ST, HDC into the last 4 STs.
When making the first half of the hat, fasten off after row 11. Then work the second hat piece and DO NOT fasten off after row 11. You will move on to row 12.
Note: For Row 12, we will hold the two pieces of the hat together and work into the sides of rows 1-11 to join the pieces.
Row 12: Holding both pieces of the hats together, turn the pieces so that you can work into the sides of rows 1-11, CH1, Work 1 SC into the side of rows 1-11, SC into the starting CH. CH2, SC into the starting CH. Turn the pieces so that you can work into the opposite side of row 1-11. Work a SC into each side of rows 1-11. (24 SC, 2 CHs.)
Fasten off leaving a 10-inch yarn end. This end will be used to sew the beard to the hat.
Gnome Beard
Row 1: CH 10, SC into the 2nd CH from the hook. SC into the next 8 CH. (9)
Fasten off.
Cut 27 eight-inch strands of yarn for the beard. Group three strands together and attach them to the 9 single crochet like you would add fringe to a scarf. (See Photo Above)
Assembling the Crochet Gnome Ornament
Take the beard piece and carefully tuck it into the hat. The hat should cover up the top of the fringe and only the strands of yarn should be seen. (See Photo). Use the yarn end from the hat to carefully sew the beard piece in place. I did not add any stuffing to the hat.
When the beard is half sewn in place, thread your wooden bead onto the yarn you are sewing with and sew the bead in place. Continue sewing the rest of the beard in place. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Creating a Gnome Garland
To create a garland, first crochet several gnome ornaments. Then decide how far apart you would like the gnomes to be on the garland. Determine how many chains you will need to work between the gnomes. To attach the gnomes to the chain, you will single crochet (or slip stitch) into the CH2 space at the top of the gnome’s hat.
Here is an example of what your garland pattern may look like.
Garland Row: *CH 15, SC into the CH2 space at the top of a Gnome Ornament* Repeat from *to* until all Gnome Ornaments have been attached. CH 15, Fasten off.
You can change the number of chains between the gnomes to create your desired spacing.
Now your Crochet Gnome ornament or garland is complete and ready to be enjoyed. They work up fast and make a great gift.
Crochet Gnome Nose
I suspect that some people would like to have an all-crochet version of this pattern, so I have provided a crochet nose pattern below. You would sew this nose on in place of the wooden bead.
With Buff (skin tone) yarn.
Round 1: Work 6 SC in a MC. (6)
Round 2: *SC in the next ST, Work 2SC into the next ST* repeat from *to* a total of times. (9)
Round 3: SC in the next 9 STs. (9)
Round 4: *SC in next ST, SC2TOG* repeat from *to* a total of 3 times. (6)
Fasten off and tuck your yarn ends into the center of the gnome’s nose. Attach the gnome to the ornament in place of a wooden bead.
