I was going to write a post about how to crochet a plant pot rim cover, but as I worked on the project I discovered a way to make four mini tassels out of one skein of embroidery thread and thought that was much more interesting. So here you get a tassel tutorial and a free pattern to make a plain terra cotta pot more festive.

Tassels are so popular right now. They are being used on earrings, blankets, pillows, scarves and so much more. Making tassels from embroidery thread is nothing new, but most tutorials show you how to get one tassel per skein of thread.
I wanted to create a lot of little tassels to hang from the rim of terra cotta pot and felt horrible trimming so much off each off. So I thought about it and developed an easy method to make mini tassels using only the thread, thread labels (these are important), and scissors.
Materials for Mini Tassels
Skein of Embroidery floss (Each Skein makes 4 tassels)
Skein of Contrasting Embrodiery Floss
Scissors
Needle
The Process
1. Push the labels to the middle. Separate the loops at each edge and tie a thread around them.
2. Push the labels to the edge and separate the strands into two groups. Tie a strand of thread around each group right in the middle of the entire skein.
3. Push the labels to the middle again and tie a second strand around all the threads about a quarter of an inch from each end. Wrap the tail of that thread around the section three times and then tie it off again.
4. Take off the labels and cut the threads where indicated. Two tassels are done, just give them a quick trim.
5. Using one label, thread the tied middle section through the label and use the label to hold the ends together.
6. Tie another strand and wrap it round to finish the top of the tassel.
7. Use the label to help trim a straight end on each tassel and you are done!
Now you have four tassels and can use them to make everyday items more festive. Want a project to use them on? Continue reading and I will show you how I used them to jazz up a terra cotta plant pot.

The pattern is designed to fit tightly around a 4 inch diameter terra cotta pot. You can make this for any size plant pot. Just measure the rim circumference, subtract 2 inches and times that number by 4. This will give you your starting chain number.
(circumference in inches – 2)x4 = Starting chain number
Pattern
Using Aquamarine.
Ch 60, Slst to form a ring.
R1: Ch 1, Sc into each Ch, Slst to first Sc, Ch 1. Do not turn.
R2-4: Sc in the Blo across, Slst to first Sc, Ch1. Do not turn.
Fasten off after Row 4. If your rim is taller than the picture shown continue repeating Row 4 until you cover tall enough for your pot.
I used Rose Shock colored yarn and a needle to add extra details to my rim cover. Using the thread at the top of each tassel, I attached a tassel to every fifth stitch and wove in the ends. Slip this one to your favorite pot and enjoy!
