Desert Sunset Shawl: Free Crochet Pattern

Colorful, light, and airy, the Desert Sunset Shawl reminds me of my trips to Sedona, Arizona. The red rock structures jutting out above the pine tree forest are beautiful and serene. This is wanted I wanted to portray in this shawl. I strived for a unique design by using a few simple stitches and alternate the stitch pattern in each row.

Desert Sunset shawl is a free crochet pattern that is the intermediate crocheter. It uses very few stitches and all special stitches are explained. This is a fun project that creates a unique design. This project only take one skein of Lion Brand Mandala yarn.

This pattern is made with one skein of Lion Brand Mandala yarn. The colorway I used is called Centaur and it displays a beautiful combination of warm and neutral earth tones. This crochet pattern uses very few stitches in different combinations to create a beautiful pattern. You will need to know how to chain, single crochet, and double crochet. Instructions are provided below for a cluster stitch.

This pattern is part of the 2019 Sprin Crochet A Long and is being updated with video tutorials! Make sure to scroll down and watch the video tutorials.

Desert Sunset Shawl: Free Crochet Pattern

Materials Needed:

1 Skein of Lion Brand Mandala Yarn

Clover Amour Crochet Hook, Size H, 5.0mm

Yarn Needle

Fiskars Scissors

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Slst – Slip Stitch

Sc – Single Crochet

Dc – Double Crochet

Cluster -Double Crochet Cluster (See Special Stitch)

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Sk St – Skip stitch

Sk2st- Skip two stitches

The double crochet cluster is all worked in  single stitch. Basically, you will work half of three double crochets and then finish them together. I will be posting a small photo tutorial soon for reference.

Special Stitch Instructions:

Double Crochet Cluster – Yarn over, pull up a loop in the next stitch, yarn over, pull through the first two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull up loop in the same stitch, yarn over, pull through the first two loops on hook, (three loops left on hook), yarn over, pull up another loop in the same stitch, yarn over, pull through first two loops on hook (4 loops left on hook), yarn over one last time and pull through all loops on the hook.

This completes the Double crochet cluster stitch. There will always be a chain right after the cluster stitch, but this is not treated as part of the cluster stitch in this pattern.

Dimensions:

This shaw measures 52 inches in width and 29.5 inches from the center top to the center point.

Gauge:

The gauge for this piece is 7 double crochet wide equals 2 inches and 4 double crochet rows tall equal 2 inches. If your gauge does not match this with the recommended hook, you can change your hook size until you meet the right gauge. Matching the gauge will ensure that this project only takes one skein.

Need a light shawl for spring or summer? This shawl is beautiful and the free crochet pattern includes video tutorials to walk you step by step through the pattern. This is a perfect shawl for women who get cold easily. #crochetshawl #crochetpattern #crochetforwomen

I am ready with yarn and hook. Unfortunately, I am already confused with Row1. So, I ch4 and sl st to form a circle and ch3, but where exactly do I make the 5 dc, ch 2 before making the next 5dc into the circle? Sorry that I am confused already. Thanks

You actually are already on the right path. After creating a circle you ch 3 and then (5dc, ch2, 5dc) into the circle you made. Let me know if this helps. If you are still confused I will work up a quick chart to help you get started.

Thank you, Lindsey! I also just reposted my question because I didn’t see it this morning from yesterday. Sorry about that…you can delete it if you want because I don’t know how to do that! Have a terrific day!

If a person wanted to try and make this bigger (using more than one ball), which row would be the repeat starting point?

I would add additional open stitch rows after row 42. So after row 42 go back and repeat Row 32, then repeat Row 33 as many times as you would like, then repeat row 34 to create a solid Double Crochet row before finishing with Row 43. Let me know if this makes sense.

Hi Lindsey! I am making this shawl and follow your pattern. But i stop at row 31 coz im getting wrong nos of dc. It says 89 dc but i am only getting 88 dc after the 2 dc in first st. If you would check in rows 30 it says 2 dc in 1st st, dc in nxt st,( dc in ch sp, dc in cluster, dc in ch sp, dc in nxt st for 21 times), (2 dc, ch 2, 2dc in ch2 spc). I am calculating the 1st half side of the row to get a correct no by row 31. So when i turn at row 31 it counts 88 dc only till the last row of the half side of row 30. Pls enlighren me on this. ( 2+84+2 = 88 dc)

Thank you so much for pointing this out. I have corrected it. There is 88dc. I also found another little error where I left out a Dc and corrected that as well in row 30.

Hi there! I have a lion brand cupcake. Would that be enough for this pattern?

      February 27, 2019 at 3:45 am

I believe it will. I used one entire skein ( just a little left over) of the Mandala cake. If they are the same yardage then you should be able to complete it with one cake.

Lovely shawl, I know the color pattern comes out from the yarn, but it still amazes me. Thank you for sharing, and good to know there a a little left over in the cake, or I would have bought a second to ease the anxiety of running short! I will check out the other colors of the cakes on line!

I just finished mine! Worked out beautifully. I used Mandala in the color Warlock. I found I needed to eliminate a couple rows of the tan color to get the final color for the last two rows. I also think there is a correction needed for the last row. When I followed the written instructions it was not appearing like your pictures, so I adjusted by adding a chain three after the closer stich per the following:

Row 43: Ch1, turn, *sc, ch3, sk2st, cluster, CH3, sk2st,* repeat from *to * 21 times, sc in ch2 space, **ch3, sk2st, cluster, CH3, sk2st, sc** repeat from **to** 21 times. After the last sc, fasten off and weave in ends.

Hi there! I love this pattern, but I have one question. (Never worked with mandala yarn before). How do I know th colors will work out right?

I just let the color changes happen where they may. The color changes do tend to happen in the middle of the row, but I do not think that takes away from the beauty of the shawl.

I love this shawl…Is this pattern available as a pdf or is there a way to print it so that I can mark off my progress?

I will work on making a PDF. I just haven’t gotten all my patterns in PDF form yet.
