Desert Sunset Shawl: Free Crochet Pattern

Colorful, light, and airy, the Desert Sunset Shawl reminds me of my trips to Sedona, Arizona. The red rock structures jutting out above the pine tree forest are beautiful and serene. This is wanted I wanted to portray in this shawl. I strived for a unique design by using a few simple stitches and alternate the stitch pattern in each row.

Desert Sunset shawl is a free crochet pattern that is the intermediate crocheter. It uses very few stitches and all special stitches are explained. This is a fun project that creates a unique design. This project only take one skein of Lion Brand Mandala yarn.

This pattern is made with one skein of Lion Brand Mandala yarn. The colorway I used is called Centaur and it displays a beautiful combination of warm and neutral earth tones. This crochet pattern uses very few stitches in different combinations to create a beautiful pattern. You will need to know how to chain, single crochet, and double crochet. Instructions are provided below for a cluster stitch.

This pattern is part of the 2019 Sprin Crochet A Long and is being updated with video tutorials! Make sure to scroll down and watch the video tutorials.

Desert Sunset Shawl: Free Crochet Pattern

Materials Needed:

1-2 Skeins of Lion Brand Mandala Yarn

Clover Amour Crochet Hook, Size H, 5.0mm

Yarn Needle

Fiskars Scissors

Stitches and Abbreviations:

Ch – Chain

Slst – Slip Stitch

Sc – Single Crochet

Dc – Double Crochet

Cluster -Double Crochet Cluster (See Special Stitch)

St(s) – Stitch(es)

Sk St – Skip stitch

Sk2st- Skip two stitches

The double crochet cluster is all worked in  single stitch. Basically, you will work half of three double crochets and then finish them together. I will be posting a small photo tutorial soon for reference.

Special Stitch Instructions:

Double Crochet Cluster – Yarn over, pull up a loop in the next stitch, yarn over, pull through the first two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull up a loop in the same stitch, yarn over, pull through the first two loops on hook, (three loops left on hook), yarn over, pull up another loop in the same stitch, yarn over, pull through first two loops on hook (4 loops left on hook), yarn over one last time and pull through all loops on the hook.

This completes the Double crochet cluster stitch. There will always be a chain right after the cluster stitch, but this is not treated as part of the cluster stitch in this pattern.

Dimensions:

This shawl measures 52 inches in width and 29.5 inches from the center top to the center point.

Gauge:

The gauge for this piece is 7 double crochet wide equals 2 inches and 4 double crochet rows tall equal 2 inches. If your gauge does not match this with the recommended hook, you can change your hook size until you meet the right gauge. Matching the gauge will ensure that this project only takes one skein.

Need a light shawl for spring or summer? This shawl is beautiful and the free crochet pattern includes video tutorials to walk you step by step through the pattern. This is a perfect shawl for women who get cold easily. #crochetshawl #crochetpattern #crochetforwomen
