Casual, light, colorful and great for any age – the Daddy and Me Slouch Beanie is a perfect gift for anyone who likes a casual style. The ribbed texture in this beanie gives the stripes a ton of character. It is great for the men in your life both big and small. This beanie works up nice and quick and can be made with or without the pom pom at the top. I have provided a pattern for an adult or child.
This beanie only takes one skein of Caron Cupcake Yarn or a similar light weight yarn. It is an easy pattern that can be made by beginner and expert alike. The beanie shown is made in Caron Cupcake yarn in “Tangerine Dream”! I made a second hat for my 4 year old son with the same color way but with a orange band. The complimenting but not matching combination makes for a great father/son gift! I used one skein for both the adult and child version with just a little yarn left over from the child version.
Daddy and Me Slouch Beanie
Materials Needed:
Hook G (4 mm)
1 Skein of Caron Cupcake Yarn (3 oz or 85g) 244 yd./223 m
or any light weight (3) yarn
Pom Pom
Scissors
Needle
Finished Size:
The brim is approximately 20″ for the men’s size and 18.5″ for the children’s size. Both have a lot of stretch. My husband’s hat is currently stretched to 23″ and fits comfortably. My 4 year old has hardly stretched his and will be able to wear it for years to come.
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Slst – Slip Stitch
St(s) – stitch(es)
Sc – Single Crochet
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
BLO – Back Loop Only
Dec – Decrease
Note:
You will be alternating a normal Half Double crochet with Half Double crochet in the third loop. You will be crocheting with out turning. This will allow all your HDC in the third loop to tilt the top of the stitch forward and all in the same direction.
Special Stitch:
In order to do a hdc in the third loop, look at the hdc from the last row so you can see the “V” made at the top of the stitch, then turn the “V” so it is facing towards your body and you will see another horizontal loop directly behind it. Insert your hook under that loop to pull up your yarn, finish the Hdc as normal.

Finishing off: Cut a long 10″ tail and using a needle weave the tail in and out of the top of the last row of stitches. Pull to the tail tight to close the top of the beanie. Tie the top of the beanie close. You can also use the tail to attach your pom pom.
Note: Some of the stripes vary in this beanie from 3 to 4 rows. This is because I changed the stitch I was using every time the color changed in my yarn. You can do this as well just keep track of what row you are on so you know when to decrease.
Finishing Touches:
With the child’s beanie I had a good amount of yarn left over. I used this yarn to weave in a contrasting color on the hdc rows. You can see this in the picture below. It is not necessary but adds just a little more character to the beanie.
