Note: Yarn amounts are for a single pumpkin. Amounts for the orange and brown will need to be doubled when making a keychain. If you use the pattern to make a garland or decorate a sweater, then you will need to multiply the yarn amounts by the number of pumpkins that you are making.
When making a pumpkin coaster, you will use two strands of yarn held together while crocheting.
Yarn Substitutions
Any yarn will work for this pattern. Size #4 yarn (medium) will use the hook listed. If you use a thicker yarn, you will have to go up one or two yarn sizes.

Start with orange yarn.
Round 1: Work 12 DC into a Magic Circle, SLST to the first ST. (12 DC)

Note: There is no turning chain in round 3.
Round 3: Skip a ST, Work 3 DC into the next ST, DC in next ST, Work 2 DC in next ST, DC in next ST, Work 3 DC into next ST, Skip a ST and SLST to the next ST. Work 2 SC into the next 2 STs. SLST to the next ST. Skip a ST, Work 3 DC into the next ST, DC in next ST, Work 2 DC in the next ST. DC in next ST. Work 3 DC in the next ST. Skip a ST. SLST to the next ST.

At the end of round 3, you will have 4 stitches from round 2 that we have not worked into. Fasten off leaving a long yarn end to sew the applique to a sweater, bag, or hat.
To add detail to the pumpkin. Start with brown yarn and stitch two lines curving around the pumpkin. Nintey percent of the line will follow the bottom of round 3. Just the very start and finish of the line will lean away from the bottom of round three and meet the edge of the pumpkin.
You can also use black yarn to embroider a Jack-O-lantern face onto the pumpkin.
Crochet Pumpkin Applique Stem
With green yarn CH 5
Row 1: SC into the second CH from the hook. Work 2 SC into the next CH, SC into the last 2 CHs. Fasten off.
When sewing the stem to its final place, tuck the end of the stem slightly behind the pumpkin applique.
Now you have a stunning crochet pumpkin applique. Make a whole pumpkin patch to decorate everything from hats to sweaters and your home. Check out the ideas below for more inspiration.

The Perfect Fall Applique
Use this applique to give an old, thrifted, or store bought cardigan a fall fashion statement. I added a handful of pumpkins to a cute cardigan for my daughter. This applique could be added to any accessory or apparel item for a cozy seasonal feel.
Pumpkin Patch Garland
Make a bunch of pumpkin appliques and string them together for a stunning garland. Use it to decorate the mantel or a festive fall tree.

A Pumpkin Keychain
Just make two appliques and sew them together. Add a swivel hook and a little stuffing and you have a quick and easy crochet pumpkin keychain. Nothing like a quick cozy season accessory to whip up in a night.
Quick Fall Coaster
Need some last minute decorations? Just make this applique with a size J (6 mm) hook and two strands of medium yarn held together. The pumpkin will come together just as fast, and you will have a lovely coaster. Add a piece of felt to the bottom for a nice finished look.
