Crochet Gourds and Crochet Pumpkins for a Handmade Autumn
Decorating for the fall is so much fun and now it can be easier and cheaper with your own handmade pumpkins and crochet gourds. You can stick these little crochet creations in every nook and cranny of your home to add a festive fall touch.
There are four patterns below. The crochet pumpkin and crochet winter squash both have two sizes and there are even 3 different ways to finish your crochet pumpkins so that they all look unique.
A Rainbow of Pumpkin Colors
Have fun with your pumpkin and winter squash decor! Pumpkins naturally come in a lot of colors including sage green, dark green, pink, white, yellow and orange. You can also just make pumpkin the color of your fall decor. I have seen a lot of white, gold and navy blue fall decorations lately and I even saw a pink leopard print pumpkin.
The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern
Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted large font PDF version of the pattern that can be purchased on Etsy or Ravelry. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag.

Crochet Gourd and Pumpkins
Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH1, turning chain, as a stitch.
– Leave a long yarn end at the beginning and end of your project to sew and gather the squash.
– Below there are 4 patterns, the small gourd, mini gourd, small pumpkin, and mini pumpkin. You will crochet the base and stem then follow the photo instruction to sew them into winter squash.
– The small stem is used for both gourds and the mini pumpkin. The larger stem is used for the small pumpkin.
Small Stem
CH 5
Row 1: HDC into the second CH from the hook, HDC in next 3 CH. (4)
Fasten off. You do not need to weave in your ends because we will just tuck them into the pumpkin or gourd.
Larger Stem
Note: This stem is worked in continuous rounds. Consider using a stitch marker to mark the last stitch of your row.
Row 1: Work 6 SC into a Magic Circle. (6)
Alternate Row 1: CH2, Work 6 SC into second CH from hook.
Row 2-5: SC in next 6 STs. (6)
Fasten off. Stuff the stem. You do not need to weave in your ends. The bottom of the stem is left open.

Continue repeating rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 28 rows. Fasten off and leave an 18-inch yarn end. This will be used with the beginning yarn end to sew up your crochet gourd.
Mini Crochet Gourd (Winter Squash)
CH 17
Row 1: SC in second CH from hook, SC in next CH, HDC in next 7 CH, SC in last 7 CH. (16)

Row 3: CH1, turn, SC in first 2 STs, HDC in next 7 STs, SC in last 7 STs. (16)
Continue repeating rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 18 rows. Fasten off and leave an 18-inch yarn end. This will be used with the beginning yarn end to sew up your crochet gourd.
Crochet Gourd Sewing and Gathering Instructions
To complete both gourds, gather the bottom of the gourd, sew the sides together, stuff, and gather to the top of the gourd while attaching the stem. Follow the photos below for step-by-step instructions.
Step 1: Sew a gathering stitch along the bottom of the squash and pull tight.
Step 2: Make 2 stitches to secure the gather.
Step 3: Use a whip stitch to sew the two sides of the squash together.
Step 4: Stuff the squash. Stuff the bottom of the squash heavily and the top of the squash lightly to avoid creating a pear shape. When you reach the top of your squash, knot your two yarn ends together to secure.
Step 5: Sew a gathering stitch at the top of the squash. Tuck in the stem.
Step 6: Pull tight and knot with the other yarn end.
Step 7: Sew a few stitches to secure the stem in place.
Step 8: Hide the yarn end in the center of the crochet gourd by pushing the yarn needle down the top of the squash and out the side an inch or two down the squash. Clip the yarn end.
Your crochet gourds are ready to decorate your home. Let’s make some pumpkins to go with them.
Crochet Small and Mini Pumpkins
The crochet pumpkins are crocheted the same way but finished in 3 ways to make them look different.
Small Crochet Pumpkin
CH 24
Row 1: SC in second CH from hook, SC in next 2 CH, HDC in next 15 CH, SC in last 5 CH. (23)
Row 2: CH1, turn, BLOSC in first 3 STs, BLOHDC in next 15 STs, BLOSC in last 5 STs. (23)
Repeat row 2 until you have a total of 38 rows. Fasten off and leave an 18-inch yarn end. This will be used with the beginning yarn end to sew up your crochet pumpkin.
Mini Crochet Pumpkin
CH 16
Row 1: SC in second CH from hook, SC in next CH, HDC in next 10 CH, SC in last 3 CH. (15)
Row 2: CH1, turn, BLOSC in first 2 STs, BLOHDC in next 10 STs, BLOSC in last 3 STs. (15)
Repeat row 2 until you have a total of 26 rows. Fasten off and leave an 18-inch yarn end. This will be used with the beginning yarn end to sew up your crochet pumpkin.
Crochet Pumpkin Sewing and Gathering Instructions
Step 1: Sew a gathering stitch along the bottom of the squash and pull tight.
Step 2: Make 2 stitches to secure the gather.
Step 3: Use a whip stitch to sew the two sides of the squash together.
Step 4: When you reach the top of your squash, knot your two yarn ends together to secure.
Step 5: Sew a gathering stitch around the top of the pumpkin.
Step 6: Stuff the pumpkin and tuck your stem into the top of the pumpkin. Pull the gathering stitch tight to close the top.
Step 7: Knot the two yarn ends together to secure the gather. Make a few stitches to secure the stem and knot your yarn ends together again.
Step 8: If you like the way the pumpkin looks then you can hide your yarn ends and be done. Or you can follow either of the optional instructions to add more details to your pumpkin.
Pumpkin Option 2: Cinched Pumpkin
For this pumpkin, we will simply use the yarn ends to cinch down the center of the pumpkin.
Step 9: Use a yarn needle to thread your yarn ends from the top to the bottom of the pumpkin.
Step 10: Pull the yarn ends tight and knot them together.
Step 11: Clip your yarn ends and hide them inside the pumpkin.
Now your cinched pumpkin is complete.
Pumpkin Option 3: Segmented Pumpkin
For this pumpkin, we will hide our current yarn ends and use a new strand of yarn to segment our pumpkin into 6 sections.
Step 9: Use an 18-24 inch piece of yarn and use a needle to thread the yarn from the bottom to the top of the center of the pumpkin. Leave about 6 inches hanging out the bottom of the pumpkin.
Step 10: Wrap the yarn around the side of the pumpkin and reinsert the needle from the bottom to the top of the pumpkin.
Step 11: Wrap the yarn from around the side of the pumpkin once more directly across from the other yarn. The two strands of yarn will cut the pumpkin in half.
Step 12: Pull both yarn ends tight to create a ridge in the sides of the pumpkin. This will segment the pumpkin into two halves. Knot the two yarn ends together at the bottom of the pumpkin. Using the same piece of yarn, repeat steps 9-12 to create a total of 6 segmented sections.
Step 13: Using the same piece of yarn, repeat steps 9-12 to create a total of 6 segmented sections.
Now your Crochet Gourd and Pumpkins are complete and ready to be enjoyed. They work up fast and make a great decoration for fall.
